Question about Computers & Internet

1 Answer

Somehow my own wireless connection is not being recognized. I noticed my speed is at 54mps and not 100%. I am hooked up to another Linksys and my computer is running very slow. When I see my own connection I cannot access it. It doesn't give me the option to use it. What happened and how do I fix it? Right now it shows I am connected wireless to the internet, however I cannot open any of my files.

    Hem, first things first :-)

It is correct that your connection is 54mb/s.

This is the same as if you had 27 wireless laptops on your connection in you local area network, also called LAN.

It doesn’t matter how fast this (you router) connection is as long as it not slower than you WAN (connection to you provider).

    - hem, that was a bit tricky, hope my Danish/English is good enough for you to understand :-)

Then there is the other issue with your Linksys not responding,

    - can you access it from your computer (WITH A CABLE) on 192.168.0.1?

HI,

Thanks for responding. To me, my router was running before at 100 mps. I took a better look and someone, somehow has tapped into my computer. My computer tends to stop working in browsers and I keep getting notifications to block access. My own router is showing, however I cannot access it. I will have to refresh my network, and reenter my own network and get that creep off my system.

Thanks for your help.

I play a on line game and it keeps freezing and on my other pc hooked up the screen keeps going black could it be the router. and my laptop that is hooked to this router is also lagging bad.

Wireless speed is significantly lower than wire speed. If you suspect your trouble is speed related, I suggest you connect to your router with Cat 5 ethernet wire - available where computer supplies are sold.

I think wireless is 10 and I am certain that wire is 100 - unless you have a 1000 router and NIC adapter.

Give it a try see what happens.

Linksys speed cut off

First, are you connected via Ethernet cable or are you linking via Wi-Fi? If Wi-Fi the speed is alway slower (up to 54 Mps) If connected by Ethernet, your connection speed should read 100 Mbps. Once you have determined the connection mode and speed.unplug the wireless router and connect the computer directly to the modem. Now test the speed and see if the speed lag is still ther. If not, you have a routing /networking issue but, it it is still the same speed, it could very well be heavy traffic ( a lot of people drawing from the same local area signal., usually at specific times of the day).

unfortunately wireless is slower. i wouldn't worry though as 100mps is what windows always says but this itself is not accurate as your isp is probably even less than 18 mbps.

Unable to connect wireless

Since you are unable to go via wireless, follow these steps:

1) Access your router configuration pages by typing in 192.168.1.1 into your web browser.
2) Click the tab that says Wireless.
3) Make sure the wireless broadcast option is enabled. If it isn't, enable it and select save settings.
4) Set up the wireless network through your Vista PC by going to Start > Network.
5) At the top of the window, select add a wireless device. Follow the onscreen instructions to add your Linksys Wireless Access Point.
6) Once added, right click on Wireless-G Router (name varies) and select configure. Follow the onscreen instructions to configure your router. (You can find your router pin by following steps 1-2 and selecting Wi-Fi Protected Set up.)
7) Once completed, attempt to connect to the internet via wireless router.

Slow Speed on Wireless Connection

As you said , try upgrading your routers firmware, but the better fix would be for a n router with a n card you will have a proper synchronisation and good speed.. or else the speed will vary, for a g router and n card..

Speed

no not really, but 54mps is a wireless speed not the actual internet connection speed... if your lagging try wire the xbox and see if that fix's

you could also disable the wep/wpa security for the xbox and hardcode the xbox MAC address into your router
