Leaves blank TV screen when Return button operated
After setting a Timer / record program, the unit will not return to the TV picture when pressing the Return button.
The only way to go back to the TV program is to Turn OFF the DVd recorder.
Whilst the Record timer remains SET no actual program recording takes place - On Playback of that disk the record time shows on the TV screen, the time counts down on the recorder display BUT there is no actual content replayed.
It may be something simple but it is difficult to get any advice either way from Sony !

Re: Leaves blank TV screen when Return button operated
It sounds as though the unit is actually recording a DVD, but is getting no incoming signal to record.
What is your recording source?
Satellite and receiver?
In the set-up menu, be sure you have chosen the proper input source; i.e., recording from where?
You may be able to access that menu through the Function button on the remote, AFter setting that menu, be sure to press Return to restore the recorder to the ready mode.
If you are using the RF input for recording, be sure that is selected as well, as opposed to L1 or L2. The input channel must match the output channel on your receiver, usually channel 3 or four.
What is the model number?

Be sure you have first set the clock correctly. After setting timer recorder time, channel, speed etc. hit enter to highlight the setting to be sure you have it. Press setup to put you back to tv screen. Then press t-Set button on remote. Unit will automatically shut off and there will be an amber symbol on the unit lcd along with the time. This indicated the unit is in the timer mode. It will automatically turn on and record the program at the set time.
For problems with timed recording, make sure the clock is correctly set. If power goes out for more than 30 seconds, the clock will be incorrect and the timer information will be off. Insert a blank tape (or one you want to record over). Then press Menu and then go to Timer Programming. (Use the up/down arrows and then hit the right arrow button.) Set the frequency of recording followed by the day and start time of the programmed recording. Then set the end time of the recording. Next set the channel number. (with some set top boxes and TV connections, choose 3 or 4 depending on the way the setting of the RF output. Then set the channel on the set top box and leave the box on.) Then set the recording speed. Press T-set to lock in the program. If you want to watch a tape before the program starts, press T-set (turning off the timer light). Remember to press T-set afterwards to resume programmed recording. You can't record to DVDs.
Which model do you have? Some of the GoVideo DVD/VCR units are only DVD players so you can only record to the VHS tape. If you have a DVD writer version, you may find it tedious but doable. First load the blank DVD and set the Disc Record mode (you will see an on-screen prompt) for VR (this lets you do more editing of the video) or Video (this choice is compatible with more players). Then set the REC Mode by pressing that button repeatedly (SP (2 hours per disc), LP or XP(1 hour per disc). For one-touch recording (recording the current program that you are receiving on the device), select your Channel and Audio track then press REC. If you press REC several times, you will set when the recording stops. Otherwise it will not end until you press STOP.
For timed recording, press Timer Record. Then go through all the items to set the DVD recording information. Record mode, Channel, start and stop times. The left and right arrows let you change menu sections and the up down scroll through the settings. Press Enter to save the programmed recording. Then press Return. Make sure blank media (or with enough room for the programmed item) is in the machine. On some units, you will need to turn off the machine for the Timed Recording to work.
For recording from external sources, press Input instead of Channel.
For any recording, leave a bit of extra space on the disc to Finalize the DVD if you will want to play the disc on other players.
Im thinking that maybe you a have a timer recording set. The whole unit wont function at all if you turn it on via power button (remote or unit). There should be a button at the top of the remote called 'timer set' pressing this will disable that mode and allow complete use of everything. but make sure u press timer set again when powering down, otherwise simply turning off the machine will leave the timer recording disabled.
Run the diagnostic software by unplugging the unit. Hold the Play while reinserting the power cord. Continue holding the Play until the diagnostic program is displays NUC XXXX where XXXX is a series of numbers. Once the diagnostics is finished it will pass or fail. To return to normal operation unplug the unit and reinsert the power cord after 15 seconds or so.
