How long has this been happening? (has it ever worked properly?) What Brand and Model is your computer? What operating system are you using? Does it work with an alternate keyboard (or an external keyboard for laptops)?
You can buy the parts to fix these on Ebay. There are two components. 1 is the light source itself. (Very fragile) The other component is the the power inverter for the light. Both have a history of going bad. They have to be removed to be tested. Probably better to replace both as a set.
That you can start in safe mode tells me that your problem is caused by some software/driver you have installed lately or in worse case by a virus. You can start by starting the pc in safe mode and uninstalling what you have installed the last couple of days or if you have the possibility, restore your system to an earlier date! if it doesn't help, you should back your files up then format the hard drive and install Windows from scratch. OBS. you might have the recovery partition on your hard drive!
IT SOUNDS TO ME LIKE THAT YOUR UNIT IS OVER HEATING WHICH IS VERY COMMON WITH CHEAPER LAP TOPS. YOU CAN GO GET A LAP COOLER FROM STAPLES OR A LOCAL ELECTRONIC STORE THEY ARE NOT VERY MUCH. DID YOU DROP IT?
