I have an imac osx and as of late when I insert a dvd, it won't be played, read or even acknowledged - it just comes back out of the slot after making some pretty grueling sounds . . .
I've tried that, even trashed my dvd player and installed anew. Still, dvd upon insertion into drive doesn't even show up on desktop, finder or anywhere else. It simple ejects itself after about a minute. I did a hardware test on my computer and all seems fine. What do you suppose could be the problemm and what might I try next?
Thank you for giving this truly fustrating problem your time and consideration. I hope to hear from you soon. Meanwhile, Godspeed, you & yours & HAPPY HOLIDAYS!!

I have not done this before however,
1. Power off the MAC.
2. Hold the Mac vertically on its side with the DVD slot facing down
3. Give gentle tap on the top and back of the laptop
Does it not acknowledge dvd disc only or cd or dvd both. If it doesn't read the dvd disc, or able to play dvd disc, but able to exlpore regular cd's, then you have a codec error, and you need to download a dvd codec like powerdvd for it for your system to play dvd disc. Check to see if your dvd-rom drive appears in the "my computer" window, if it is there, but wouldn't be able to play anything, then it could be a driver issue. so make sure in the hardware , the drivers is installed and working properly. If it is working properly and driver is installed, then you got a bad drive, the optical laser lenses isnt reading or the spindle ain't working anymore if you don't hear disc being loaded when inserting the disc.
HDC-SD5 + iMac = perfect compatibility I have an iMac (early 2011).-I remove the SDHC card from the camera-plug the card directly into the iMac SD slot (Below the CD/DVD slot) -wait 5 seconds till iMovie or Final Cut X download high-quality HD video. I was digitizing video on a Mac IIx back in the late 1980's, a long, tiresome error-ridden process that only just worked. The tools we have today are brilliant.Anybody wanting to do serious or hobby video on a computer needs one of Steve Jobs' babies. No downloads of drivers, no conversions, no installation.Just plug 'n play. Hope this helps
You can clean your DVD Drive by inserting the Disk Cleaner its either dry or liquid cleaner. If you don't have a disk cleaner just purchase it in the store near in your neighborhood. In that way you can clean the DVD Drive Laser eye and make it possible to read another disk next time you used. Usually it takes 15 minutes the standard cleaning time if you are cleaning the DVD Drive to ensure that it is properly cleaned. Also if it doesn't work then probably you can find a technician and let it check to the technician. I hoe that the laser eye of your DVD Drive is not damage due to some disk you inserted earlier.
Hope this recommendation helps solved your problem. If you need more assistance just reply to this post. thanks
1. Go to System/Library/Caches and trash the folder com.apple.kernelcaches
2. Go back to System/Library and trash the file Extensions.kextcache
3. Restart.
If that doesn't work, try trashing this file:
~Home/Library/Preferences/CD Info.cidb
That is the way its done
if the iMac is one of the computers with the slot-load drive (you don't load the disc into a tray before it goes into the computer), then placing a disc smaller than a regular CD/DVD will damage the CD drive and will be very hard to remove.
you could buy an external CD/DVD drive and then use smaller discs with the iMac.
When you say it won?t read are you trying to play commercial DVD movies or read DVD data disks?
If you're trying to play movies then you need a couple of things the first being some type of player program. Real player works as does Windows media player but usually DVD drives come with a striped down version of PowerDVD or WinDVD.
If you in fact have a player installed and when a DVD is inserted in your drive it doesn't play it may not be configured to automatically play DVDs. Try opening your player program and trying to manually play your DVD.
Let us know if you have any success or if you need more assisted. If you do let us know what player program and operating system you have and any error messages that may appear.
