To use the scan features, the HP All-in-One and computer must be connected and turned on. The HP Photosmart Software must also be installed and running on your computer prior to scanning. To verify that the HP Photosmart Software is running on a Windows computer, look for the HP Digital Imaging Monitor icon in the system tray at the lower right side of the screen, near the time. NOTE: Closing the HP Digital Imaging Monitor icon in the Windows system tray can cause the HP All-in-One to lose some of its scan functionality. If this happens, you can restore full functionality by restarting your computer or by starting the HP Photosmart Software.
The HP Photosmart Software must also be
installed and running on the computer before scanning.
Check that the USB cable is firmly plugged in to the printer and computer. Unplug the power cord both from the wall socket, and the printer. Wait 60 seconds. Re-attach the power cord securely. Power on. Try the scan again.
Under normal circumstances, a blinking power button just means that the machine is busy with a task. Be sure to let it finish its current task before initiating another.
HP does not support Vista operating system, no software or drivers for it are offered at all. If Vista, you also cannot use either the scan button on the "All-in-One" or the usual method of HP Solution Center. HP has discontinued the F4180 and supports it only minimally.
You can scan via Windows Photo Gallery, or though Paint, or through Windows Fax and Scan. File - Import from camera or scan, or File - scan, are paths.
I have loved this printer/scanner but plan myself to avoid anything HP makes in the future because of this "support".
fredwilliam- this unit comes with the photosmart essentials software and according to hp this is a low end photosmart... the software might not be getting installed correctly due to insufficient previlages on the computer for your userlogin. Download and run the software three times from the following link from hp http://tinyurl.com/5u2pg then uninstall and install again. If you have had another hp camera or printer installation remove that before you reinstall.
place the picture on the glass........open HP solution center.......click on scan picture......it will dispaly the preview of the picture....select scan to photosmart essential........click on accept.....it will scan the picture and open in photosmart Essential.
