A grey band stays at the top of the screen with the "analogue" icon on the left and the channel number on the right. I can see the picture through the grey band but how do I get rid of the band?
I found a manual for your TV, I don't have the time to read it all but thought you might find your answer in there. http://pdf.crse.com/manuals/3298243431.pdf
I hope this helps you. Good luck and sorry I can't help you more.
SOURCE: I can't get rid of the information bar across the top of my TV
Press " i " (information) button on TV remote and on-screen display will disappear.
SOURCE: a grey square in the top left corner
This TV dose have PIP (Picture in Picture), Press the PIP button on the remote and see what happens. If fail then I would recommend to call Viewsonic.

SOURCE: I was watching my TV last night and the screen
Generally in these cases that means it's a faulty cable or loose connection.
On LCD's if the screen dies or anything internally for that matter, the screen would stay black. Grey means a signal is coming through, but it's being able to receive it.
Solution:
Check your cables for any loose connections or try alternate cables going to your tv set.
Hope that helps. If you need anymore help let me know :)
