Question about Gateway 1 Bay (8006136) External Drive Case

My gateway 1 won't even start. Returned under warranty

It's been two months now and they still can't fix it. It's cost me a lot in lost business.

    Thanks Geekman,

    Thats exactaly what I did. Now I'm in the drivers seat. How can I contact Gateway legally? They always promise to call back but never do.

    By the way I bought a HP. It's great. Maybe the HP legal dept would want to help.

If you have backed up your data, then get a new computer and copy the data to your new computer.
It should not take 2 months to identify the fault and advise the course of action.
The cost of lost business would probably be less that the cost of a new computer.

    In Australia we have a Consumers Affairs agency and we can driect our complaints against a company with facts.

    You might have a similar agency in USA, can't help you from my end.

You can actually check on or you can check it at bestbuy stores, for sure they have all what you needed.

They have very cheap price comparing to the other stores.

Nx2 hard drive case power lite on (red) but the hard drive does not run. Green operation lite never illuminates. All cables check good. Removed and replaced with another hard drive; same results....

try other usb port, or other computer and see whether the hdd is detected. If still not, try to go to device manager ( ), and then assign a drive letter to the hdd. After that, try to access it from Computer, if not able to access it, format it (use quick format) and then use this program to recover your files.

It has started to make a clicking sound. I have only had it for 2mos and I have never dropped it.

Hi Lou - It doesn't matter how long you've had it or how you've treated it. Sometimes things just fail. The clicking pretty much always means the drive is about to fail.

Move as much data (if it's important) on to another drive, such as your computers or another external drive if you have one. Once you move you data (or not) shut down the drive and do not power it up again.
Since you've had it two months I'm going to assume it has a warranty. Call the manufacturers or sellers tech support as soon as possible. They'll give you an RMA (return material authorization) and hopefully you'll have a new working drive shortly.

My hard drive just clicks and will not mount.

If you hear a repetitive clicking noise from the disk, I'm afraid it will no longer work. That is an indication that the disk's heads are failing to read from the disk, or in other words that the disk is faulty.
If it's still under warranty you could (and should) get it replaced. Hope you have a backup of all the important files in it!

Hard disk not detected

Try plugging the enclosure's usb to another USB slot. If the computer still will not read it, then the enclosure itself might be defective and not the actual harddisk that is inside.

To verify this, try to mount the harddisk to another enclosure and test. If the enclosure is still under warranty, you can return it back to save repair costs.

if your computer came with a motherboard disk the drivers could be on it
click start control panel administrative tools computer management device manager scroll down universal serial bus controllers you could see a yellow question / exclamation mark? ! or a red X
you will need to update/reinstall drivers
right click to reinstall drivers
if you can see your usb drive but its not working
ports (com&lpt) right click update driver if this fails to fix the problem
check the USB leads that attach to the motherboard usually red white green black make sure they are securely seated and have no dust build up on them dust will cause static and a lot of unforeseen problems for a computer and its parts

First, please disconnect all USB devices and then perform the following steps:
Click "Start" button, type "devmgmt.msc" (without quotation marks) in the "Search" bar and press "Enter". Click "Continue" if necessary.
In Device Manager, double click to expand "Universal Serial Bus controllers", right click on the Host Controller, click "Uninstall" and click "OK".
Repeat the step 2 to uninstall all items under "Universal Serial Bus controllers".
Then, restart your computer and Windows 7 will reinstall all USB controllers automatically.

Google the model numbers of the drives to compare specs like transfer rate and access time before you get too frustrated!

Yesterday my USB external 400GB Seagate hard drive started making clicking noise and my desktop can no longer detect it. Please help. I don't have lots of money to pay to recover data.

Sorry to report that the solution offered to me was referrals to companies that do data recovery but the price is too expensive for ordinary people like myself. I will have to take out a second loan in order to afford their cost! I wish I could be referred to companies who offer a more affordable/reasonable cost for data recovery for non-business owners who happen to have important documents stored in their hard drives but will not bankrupt them if not retrieved.

hello dear worldvet,
I did write the results as there are more customers working with similar problems as mine. About challenge the fee is tempting but I will not do so as I had some joy with participating and reading on the FixYa web and learned a lot from that.
