    This is what i did
    email From norton
I understand from your Email that you receive error message after removing Norton from your computer.

The issue you are encountering should occur if the product was not properly removed from the computer. This issue can occur if any of the installed third party product is interfering with the uninstallation process.

I suggest that you remove the complete traces of Norton from your computer in a clean boot mode.

    STEP 1: Clean Boot:

A clean boot strips Windows of unnecessary programs, settings, and services. (Services are like small programs that are always running in the background of Windows.) The Windows System Configuration Utility lets you do this quickly and effectively. If intermittent problems disappear after performing a clean boot, you can identify the offending software program or service by re-enabling them one at a time until the problem recurs. If you have lots of software and services that automatically start with Windows, expect this process to take some time; you have to reboot after enabling each service or program.

To start your computer only with Microsoft services, please refer the provided link:

    Document ID: 2002040815531039
    > Web URL:
    http://service1.symantec.com/support/tsg...

    Note:
Please do not follow the Step 3 from the above document until you finish troubleshooting.

    STEP 2: Remove Norton:
We have a Tool called Norton Removal Tool which removes all the Norton programs from the system since 2003 range of products. To remove all the installed Norton products, Please refer our below given link:

Title: 'Download and run the Norton Removal Tool'

    Norton Antivirus 2008

    system tpr 32-bit operating system

After completing this iam no longer able to connect to the internet using my desktop as my bigpond connection manager is asking me load bigpond software. the software will not load i have been on the phone to bigpond but afet several attempts they cannot help me. my modem works on laptop so they think its somethng else.

how exactly did you uninstall norton. did you simply unistalled it from the add/remove programs or did you use a norton uninstaller utility?

what norton version did you uninstall?

what operating system do you have on your computer?

have you contacted bigpond for them to guide you through the installation? are they blaming your computer for not being able to connect to internet??

Things to try:
1. try to reinstall the bigpond software in safe mode. btw: what error do you get when trying and not being able to load the bigpond software.
2. check for errors in even viewer under 'system' and 'application' and post back with findings. look for any errors associated with failing services or drivers, or internet explorer (or firefox depending on what you use).
3. check in device manager and make sure there's not problems with your network adapter (make sure there's ? or ! signs next to the network adapter and make sure the device is working normally by looking into the status device under properties.)
4. this is probably worth to try: use system restore and go to a previous date in which everything was working fine. then uninstall norton again while in safe mode and as per directed by norton they try to connect to internet again.

5. I would be very carefull using ccleaner If you still want to use it do it as a last resort. I would also make a restore point before using it.

post back with your findings.

Try these steps:

1. Uninstall it again using Control Panel -> Uninstall Programs. (BUT) Uninstall the LiveUpdate first, then the rest of the Symantec software.

2. Go to http://www.ccleaner.com/ and download the newest version.

First click on Cleaner.

This is the main feature of the program, which will allow you to optimize your system, by removing unused and temporary files. It also protects your personal privacy by removing traces of the websites you have visited and the files you have opened.
(It's important to point out that it does this without removing any files you'll still need!)

Select the button on the right, not the Analyze button, it'll look but not act on anything.

When done, then click on Registry.

This is a more advanced feature which analyses your computers registry (where windows system settings are stored) and fixes any problems and inconsistencies that exist.

Reboot even if you're not asked to - re-mount your install CD and you should be good to go.

COMPUTER IS COMPLETELY RUNNING SLOW -ALL PROGRAMS TAKING

Hi,
Try opening Windows task manager, terminating some programs and see if the computer runs quicker. If not then make sure you have an up to date anti-virus. Personally I would recommend Norton Anti-Virus, the full version that you pay for or any other full version anti-virus will do. Scan your computer for viruses and then have the anti-virus remove them. The problem may also be that the Operating system (OS) you are running may be using up a lot of computer resources and you may have to switch to a less demanding OS or upgrade your computer to the recommened specifications of the OS.
Hope this helps

Tip

Do you have Norton Anti-Virus on your PC.

8 out of 10 computers have Norton Anti-Virus installed on their PC. Or you getting message to tell you to update your subscription? If so read on.

Have you notice that your PC is slowing down, or you getting blue screens, is your PC slow to boot, those your PC shutdown really slow. Are you getting pop-ups stating that your PC is infected. These are all symptoms of an out of date Norton Ant-Virus subscription. Even if you have have a current Norton Anti-Virus subscription you may still be infected.

OK, so here is how to fix your PC. First if you do not want to use Norton Anti-Virus anymore you need to remove it. You need to remove it from the control panel add/remove programs. You also need to get the Norton removal tool from Symantec, which makes Norton Anti-Virus. Watch my video from more details. Click here

So now your PC should be running better than before. Remember once Norton Anti-Virus is removed you need to scan it for viruses and then protect it. I recommend and personal use Avast, it is Free for home users and it simply works. Avast does not slow down your computer and it updates everyday with a visual and audio indicators. What more could you ask for. I use Malwarebyte's Anti-Mal ware on-line protection in conjunction with Avast for total protection. You can get that here. Try the free version first and it will get all those infections that Norton Anti-Virus failed to protect. Then upgrade to the Pro version if you need it. Here is the site http://www.malwarebytes.org/.

So now your PC is virus free and protected. What else can you do. I would get Ccleaner from www.ccleaner.com, this is also a free utility that I use. It removes all those temp files and other junk that is slowing down your PC. I do not recommend any registry programs. If you have any those on your PC. You need to remove them, they do not work.

The last thing you need to get is to de-frag your hard drive. I use this one. It is also Free so get it. Click here.

So now you are done and your PC should be a lot faster and better. However if you are still having issues you need to reload your whole operating system. Most people do not have the original CD so you will have to get a professional to do this. If you need help with that you can visit my site at www.adjustservices.com.

I hope this tip was helpful.

Regedit, Gpedit,Cmd and task manager not work, safe mode either.

This is usually a virus? Anyway try below, and run a full virus scan, download & use, Conbofix, CWShredder, SDFix, Hijackthis, go to www.housecall.com,that will run avirus scan, and remove them remotely.. works great, To get back your programs, in any event below.. Here’s a free tool called Remove Restrictions Tool (RRT) which is able to re-enables all what the virus had previously disabled, and gives you back the control over your own computer.
remove-restriction-tool.pngRemove Restrictions Tool is able to re-enable:
- Registry Tools (regedit)
- Ctrl+Alt+Del
- Folder Options
- Show Hidden Files
Small and easy to use. Make sure you boot in to Safe Mode to use Remove Restrictions Tool (RRT). Just click on the buttons and it’ll do it’s job.

I have a hp a288n desktop. It quit responding as it has done previously and it wouldn't turn off, so I turned it off by the power button. When I went to turn it back on it would not start. I have unplugged...

I've attached the steps needed to be taken if your computer does not turn off.
If you pc is turned off and you can't turn it on now, please provide me more informations like;
  • what is the color of your screen
  • what written on your screen
  • Can you see cursor blinking or arrow
  • Any error message displayed?
  • The HP or Compaq Logo Screens are Missing on Startup
  • When the pc stops responding, before or after Windows start up?
Steps below is to show you how to resolve the issue of the pc not shutting down.

Step 1: Using one anti-virus program
You only need one anti-virus program. If more than one anti-virus program is open at the same time, uninstall the extra software programs. Several virus scanning software on the same PC can create software conflicts. This is also true for multiple versions of the same anti-virus software. For example, if Norton Antivirus version five and Norton Antivirus version 2002 are both installed on the same PC, uninstall the older version (version 5 in this case). Use the following steps to remove programs:
  • In Windows XP, click Start , then Control Panel.
  • In Windows 95, 98, and Me, click Start , Settings , then Control Panel
  • Double-click Add/Remove Programs
  • Select the anti-virus software that you want to remove and click the Add/Remove button, or the Change/Remove button in Windows XP.
  • Restart the PC when the uninstaller has finished.
  • When the Windows desktop appears, restart the PC again. The PC should shut down and restart normally this time. If not, continue to the next step.
Step 2: Disabling Software that opens with Windows
For troubleshooting purposes, reduce the amount of software that opens with Windows to try and find out if a software conflict is occurring.

  • Open the Microsoft System Configuration software (Msconfig), remove the selection next to Load Startup Items , click OK , and restart the PC.
  • For more information, refer to Preventing Programs from Opening When Windows Starts .
    Restart the PC using Windows.
  • If the Windows still fails to close, continue to next step.

Step 3: Turning off all power options
Turn off all Windows power management options and shut down the PC as follows.

  • In Windows XP, click Start , Control Panel , and then Performance and Maintenance.
  • In Windows 95, 98, and Me, click Start , Settings , and then Control Panel .
  • Double-click the Power Options icon.
  • The Power Options Properties window appears.
  • Click the Power Schemes tab and change all selections under Settings for Always On power scheme to Never .
  • Click the Hibernate tab and remove the check mark from Enable hibernate support .
  • Click the OK button to accept the changes, and then restart the PC.
  • When the Windows desktop appears, restart the PC again. The PC should shut down and restart normally this time. Regardless, continue to the next Step to see if a BIOS update is available.
Step 4: Upgrading the BIOS
The BIOS is code that the PC uses at start up and is responsible for many things. One of those things is power management, which can get in the way of the shutdown process.

Please rate my solution.

My Norton anti virus has stopped working and will not activate

Bro, my suggestion is, you uninstall you Norton Anti-virus including the Symantec folder installation then install one that is free but can still perform as good as Norton. I am not saying NOrton Anti-Virus is a bad program but, it is systemic and slows down your computer a bit. Norton is a great product everybody kows that !!!! What i can share with you is that, try downloading AVG free or AVAST home edition for which, if you are connected to your net, they regularly send updates to your computer as long as you are registered and your key is up to date. If your Norton Anti-virus is notactivating, it only means one thing, it's not updated.

Pc connection problem

Your version Norton Anti Virus has to have a license key to work with more than one computer.

Does SBCglobal (or AT&T) allow their customers to download Norton Anti Virus from thier website?

I know Comcast and Cox does something similar with McAfee.

I want to give up my Norton anti virus. How do I do that so that I don't have any remnants left over in the computer ??

Hello alimarie919,

First...congratulations on the Norton removal!
To remove it, go to Control Panel, Add/Remove Programs, scroll down until you find 'Norton's ....', and then Remove. When it asks if you would like to remove "ALL"....click 'yes'. Once that has been removed, you will need to reboot.
When the computer has restarted, go back into the Add/Remove Programs and remove all of the other programs related to *either* 'Norton's' or 'Symantec'.

Please completley remove the norton security from my computer...trying to run something comcst says you need to do something to rmove it...please do asap ...thank you

Go into Control Panel, then Add/Remove Programs. Wait for the list of all programs to load up.

Go down through the list and look for Norton Internet Security. Remove it. It will take a very long time, sometimes 1/2 hour or more depending on speed of computer. Reboot the computer after it has been removed, especially if/when it asks you to reboot after the process.

After rebooting, go back into Control Panel, Add/Remove Programs. Look for Symantec or Norton's Live Update, remove that as well. Also remove any other Symantec/Norton Anti-Virus or Internet Security programs as well. Then reboot the computer again.

Your computer should be much, much faster now. So now you need a new Anti-Virus program...

I've found in my experience that Norton and McAfee do more damage to some computers than good, besides the fact that they are severely over-priced. I would NEVER install either Norton (Symantec) or McAfee on anyone's computer. Matter of fact, I just had to remove Norton 2008 from a lady's computer today, an old Dell 2400 because her system was too old and slow to run new Norton.

My suggestions for much better anti-virus would be...

- Kaspersky Anti-Virus (search for it on Google, etc)

- Trend Micro PC-Cillin Anti-Virus (search for it on Google, etc)

- AVG Free Anti-Virus at http://free.grisoft.com, they also have more elaborate versions with more protection for a cost.

I personally use AVG on my computers, and my family does as well. It's very effective and gets out viruses that even Norton cannot remove.
