Jailbreaking your iPhone to 2.2 is going to mess up your phone. I've got a jailbroken 2.2 iPod Touch and it's ok - a friend of mine also tried to jailbreak his iPhone to 2.2 and lost connections as well.

You have to jailbreak the phone so you can activate it. It's a long process but you need to download redsnow 0.9.4, firmware 3.1.3 and 3.1.2 plus the bootloaders. Since you're done with the restore, run redsnow now. Select 3.1.2 firmware then follow onscreen instructions. Check Install Cydia and Unlock when prompted and browse for the bootloaders. If you followed all the instructions carefully, your phone will be unlocked and activated in no time.
If it was bought unlocked for under $700 then it was unlocked illegally after updgrading to 3.0 it is locked again. If you upgrade to any of appples unpdates your phone will be locked each time and you will have to wait for an unlock solution to be released each time. Currently there is no way to unlock the 3g under 3.0 firmware only the 2g is unlockable to the 3.0...I know case i have one. Jailbreaking and unlocking are different. You have to downgrade your firmware to unlock it. Restore your phone via iTunes using one of your old backups, you should be fine.
