Hi there - I also have the same problem, I've checked the PAL and NTSC settings and nothing has changed but still I get a black and white picture. I just moved house and hooked up the recorder in exactly the same way, now it just plays black and white. The only difference I don't have cable hooked up...

-   I hooked up the system by the manual instructions and got to the menu selection. When I accidentally pressed ok to the SATV setting, I get nothing but a black and white picture which continually rolls. As a result I cannot get back to the menu to remove the setting for the SATV. Any suggestions?-   verbe

Yeah, PAL vs. SECAM, second thing I thought of. Check that.
Are you using the S-video output? S-video passes the luma (brightness) and sync on one pin, chromiance (color) on another, so a bad cable or bent pin will cause similar symptoms, but in this case, the picture will be nice and stable, just monochrome.
If using component video out, you probably have some of the cables mixed up.
There can one of two problems here. Either your DVD player's output is set to NTSC and you are attempting to play it through a PAL (European) TV, or you are perhaps using the SVHS output incorrectly. The solution is to access the player's setup menu and ensure the video output is set to your standard (PAL or NTSC). Hope this helps!
This worked for me push your n/p botten to NTSC then go into setup and put your generl SPDIF output to SPDIF/RAW and then go over to video and make sure your compontent is off hope this helps
I have the same problem or just did 10 minutes ago. What I did was go to "setup" on my remote. Then I went to "Video" and "TV System". It was on "Pal" so I changed it to "NTSC". I probably accidently hit a wrong button lastnight when I was lowering the volume or something on my DVD.
Tonya: Just thought it would be helpful for me to note that on the current (12/07) range of U.S. Philips-branded players (the four-digit ones like 5982, 5140, 3160, etc), you can NOT change the TV type in the setup menu like you used to on the 642 and earlier players. The ONLY option is NTSC. Presumably, Philips disabled the choosability of NTSC/PAL/MULTI to make the players more idiot-proof (since most purchasers of the US models will be using them on NTSC sets). I notice that the UK version of the 5982 (DVP5980) retains this functionality (it's in the manual), so this is clearly something the player SHOULD still be able to do, but something that has been disabled (via firmware) at the factory.

I tried to play a movie last night and it only showed bright pink, green, and yellow colors. i tried another dvd that had played the night before but got the same result. I am using an HDMI cable to the tv and it worked fine the night before. Any ideas?
I've had this Sony DVD player for years. It has always played fine, but recently it has only been playing in black and white. What could be the problem?
I had the same problems with some DVD'S (camcorder discs etc) and for all DVDS on a new HD system. I switched from s-video to component 3 wire and all worked fine. If you only have two wire phono leads then use the s-video lead as the third lead via component making sure connections are correct.
