If you have an external drive that has a capacity that all the content of your D drive will fit you can just simply copy and paste all the files from your D drive to the external drive....

Check in "Properties" i if your external hard dreive is really full. If it is full, check entries; probably about half of your hard drive is useless backup. Delete unnecesary files and folders so it might continue backing up.

After doing a full backup to an external drive i have lost connection to the internet and have lost my DNS setting

What program did you use to back up your data? You may want to try resetting your Modem & Router (if you have one). Just turn them off for a few minutes, then turn them back on. You might also want to restart your machine.

My back up is full

Delete older images or, modify backups by using selective items instead of broad strokes like the whole drive. You could backup with less frequency.

There is the options of doing Differential backup and less Full backups.

Swap out tape or hard drive.

Recovery D drive

From what you described above "recovery D drive full", this is your recovery partition and you should not be using it as a file storage. Plug in your external drive again, I bet you find that its drive letter is not D.

Accidentally disconnected external HD while moving files

have the files been deleted from the laptop? if not i would simply do a fresh format on the external and re migrate data. if they are then you can get software such as undelete or recover my files to restore your deleted data off of your laptop drive.

Tells me I don't have enough hard drive space

I would first check the capacity of your external hard drive. From "My Computer", right-click the drive letter of the external drive and select Properties. Make sure that the drive has the amount you need in *free* space - it's possible that it's just full with other files.

If this is the first time you're using this drive, you may need to format it before it will recognize its own capacity. Right-click the drive letter and select Format.

Need to transfer copied files to x301 after full restore

create a new folder in your hard-disk and first try to copy 1-2 files from the external hard-drive to the new folder (copy any data/work/images you have stored/created not any files of windows folder or root of c: drive)

if the above copy works then copy back all except the c: root and these folders - Windows folder, Document & settings, Program Files

If you clear/format the external and you have whatever program you are using to backup, it will start backing up again. Make sure you do not delete any critical files you have backed up before wiping it.
