Question about Dell Dimension C521 PC Desktop

1 Answer

Motherboard change i've recently changed my dell c521 motherboard with a new one because it had the solid amber light power button problem, or famous POST problem, anyway, it was not a PSU problem nor video, memory, hdd, o processor problem. I change the motherboard, now i can boot and get into windows, but the button is still in the solid amber light and the fans run all time... ¿What can i do? Please help.

4 lights off, power button solid amber, aux power in the motherboard solid amber too... fan of the processor is like crazy, fan of the pwsupply seems fine... are you saying that i have a bad pwsupply? It's normal that you get the motherboard damaged and the powersupply too, at the same time? This is the price of "technology"? Can i solve the fans problem getting into Bios? Thanks

Dell is a problem too, i'not under warranty anymore, so they really don't care... I have contacted them, told me to unplugg cards, etc.,etc., nothing happend and they could not help me anymore because the warranty. So i go with two technicians and both told me it was the motherboard. One of them was like an official Dell parts supplier, and said to me that a new motherboard was around 500 dollars... I can't afford that -better buy a new pc don't you think so?- I search in the internet and found this supplier, sold me the motherboard for 100 dollars, i installed it, and that's all, i have the problem you now know. The pc turns on without pushing the power button...! I think is a good idea to replace the powersuplly, but i feel more like destroying the pc! Thanks again....

Is a UT226 system board for Dell c521. I have not any documentation. Could that help? Thanks

  • jethromex Dec 06, 2008

is not the ram, i've tested both sticks, one at a time, still the same problem. Tested too the video card, the modem card.. ¿Could it be the cpu fan? I've unplugged it from motherboard but the solid amber light continues... maybe is the powersupply as you first told me, or maybe is the motherboard, i mean, that's just incompatible because it is some kind of evaluation rom... Thanks for the post, and thanks for the answer

I have the exactly same problem on my c521, we probably bought the motherboard off the same guy on Ebay. when I boot up i notice that it says evaluation ROM on the first screen. everything seems to work fine when im in windows but Amber light is on and fan keeps running, will the constant running of the fan screw up my computer?

check on system lights... what are the diagnostic lights telling you??
if the 4 lights are off you may have a problem with the led itself or the powersupply is just messing with your head.

odd... (particular if you say you're able to use your computer while still getting amber lights)..

the power supply is more likely to fail (it's possible that a bad powersupply could damage a motherboard, not all they way around) than a motherboard so trying to replace the power supply would be something I would consider...

what's the reference (make and model) of your new motherboard?- I've been interested in knowning what the amber light means on your motherboard and the documentation on your motherboard should give you an idea)

what is dell saying about your problem? (as per directions on the link I gave you, contacting dell is suggested given the conditions you described

post the ref number of your new motherboard... is there anything in the motherboard documentation that possibly came with the board regarding the amber lights on it?

it could be ram.. as read on post above.. test the ram sticks one at a time and see if the computer POSTs correctly, and replace ram accordingly if needed.

Dell c521 motherboard diagrams problems

Per Dell's support site: If the power light is a solid amber, a device might be malfunctioning or incorrectly installed.

Turn off the computer and unplug from power:

I would remove and unplug everything except the memory and video card. Then plug the computer back in.
If it posts (dell screen and then a hard drive warning), turn off the computer and start reinstalling each component one at a time and turn on between each install. Hopefully one compenent will fail and you will know what is bad and needs replacing.
If the computer still had the amber light, remove one of the memory modules (hoping you have 2) and try again. If it still fail exchange the modules. If this works you have a bad memory chip, reinstall the rest the componets to double check and power on. Replace the bad chip.
If the computer still fails on both modules, remove both, you should now get a memory beep code, if not then the video card is most likely bad and will need to be replace.

Hope this helps

I have a Dell Dimension E520 that I've used for

If the power LED is solid Amber, then the like answer is a bad motherboard or peripheral connected to it. So, remove any expansion cards (I See you already removed the Graphics card) and all external connections (Just use power cord) and see if the system will power on with any different indications. If the power LED stays Solid Amber, replace the motherboard

If the power button is solid amber, then there is a motherboard failure or a failure in something connected to the motherboard.
Remove any expansion cards and all external connections, if no change replace the motherboard
If the LED is flashing Amber, most likely the power supply

Hi - our dell dimension c521 is stuck in power save mode. The light on the monitor is solid orange and will not respond to the keyboard or mouse

A solid amber light indicates a pre-POST failure has occurred. The system has received a Power Good signal from the power supply so it's not a power supply issue. HERE is the documentation that tells what the lights mean and possible solutions.

Solid orange light on my vostro 200

If your fans come on full blast then you have a bad motherboard. If the amber light blinks, you have a bad power supply.

Amber light on power button of Dell Dimension 4500

ok - the amber light of doom on a dell means one of two things - either your power supply is pooched - or your motherboard, If under warranty dell will send out a friendly tech to replace them - if not it will cost you a bit. get the price and consider if it worth upgrading instead. Contact your dell rep or dell tech support and see what they say

cheers Pete

Amber Light and fan running

1st thing, disconnect everything but keyboard mouse and monitor, see if anything changes.

If the issue persists, ensure that all power and card connections for the motherboard are tight and secure. If you've added RAM or other parts, remove them. Reseat the RAM in the motherboard that came from Dell.

If none of those ideas have any effect on the issue, replace the motherboard.
