Hi Ron,

We do so understand your frustration - there really are so many things that one can do themselves to "fix" our machines. Unfortunately, there isn't a good book written on that! Wish there was - often thought of trying to write one based on our own experiences...but...

Just so you understand that your warranty is void if you make the repairs yourself, your dealer may or may not be willing to order parts for you. They are not available to consumers for warranty reasons. Understandable - while you may be technically adept (as are many of us) unless you're trained on a specific model, there are things that can go disastrously wrong.

If you have specific questions in the future, keep our info handy - we both worked for Pfaff in the past (for a whole LOT of years) and are always willing to help when we can... We are more than willing to share what knowledge we have about repairs and adjustments but also will not hesitate to direct you to a dealer if it's something that you really should not attempt yourself but will always give you the reason why.

Hope this helps with your decision and search for parts.

Happy stitching,
Kim & Linnette

Flywheel is jammed. How can I get it going again?

Could be it's frozen due to lack of oil and cleaning. If the machine is a mechanical, try this:
It was working now it seems to be frozen the needle part wont move

If it is still hung up, then there could be thread wrapped around the handwheel or a gear may be damaged. Time for repair service.

PFAFF 1222E locked up. Has been siting for some time. Any advice?

Most sewing machine technicians would not recommend using WD-40. Instead, pick up a bottle of liquid Tri-Flow Synthetic Oil at the hardware store and apply a drop every place that metal rubs on metal. However, AVOID oiling any plastic gears! It is also not a particularly good idea to force parts to move as they could break. If they are frozen from lack of lubrication, the Tri-Flow, along with heated air from a handheld hair dryer directed at the metal parts will most often free them up. (Repeat the process as needed.)

Here is a web site that talks about issues with the plastic gears breaking/cracking on this particular machine, so this may also be your issue:

How do i fix a n elna su that will not stop after releasing the foot pedal

I'm guessing this is an Elna air electronic SU? If yes, then the problem is with the diagram inside the right side of the machine where your air control foot pedal tube feeds in. I havent' done this repair myself, I took mine to my favourite sewing machine technician. But if you are technically able, try joining the Yahoo Group called Elna Heirlooms, and then go through the threads there, there's been discussion on this repair before.

Singer Genie 353 - Broken Top Gear?

try this link for parts for the machine

if you just bought the machine, then why not take it back and get
another one that doesn't have a broken gear, some of the gears
have to be retimed once the gears are replaced and sometimes
it's not possible to get a repair manual for some machines.

Needle won't move.....

I cannot find anything about "American Standard Sewing Machines" in a google search. Thoughts: sounds like your gears are frozen. I would take it to a different repair shop. Try to find an older person to repair it. Never under estimate the old guys.

Find a gear part to repair my Bernett 334d

Has the horizontal shaft gear (white nylon gear) inside your overlocker failed? Does it look like this?

My repair man obtained this part from Bernina and was able to repair this although it is a labour intensive repair requiring pulling down the whole machine to do. But the part itself was only $US38.

You can buy from sewingpartsonline as per link above.

Or you could ring Bernina head office in your country and talk to someone about it as I was initially told my machine was unrepairable as this part was not available by a local store who wanted to sell me a new one. I guess in light of the 4-5 hour repair time, this is probably a valid call if you buy a new plastic serger but I love my Bernette and felt it was worth repairing, not junking it. It is now 5 years later and still going strong since that repair. My OSMG (old sewing machine guy) Ken told me that the nylon gears sometimes will just crack, even if the machine hasn't had lots of work, just plastic ageing.

Hope this helps you - please rate me 4 thumbs up if so. Cheers

I need a schematic or photos of the under carriage of a Babylock BL1556. No repairman will fix mine. I have it disassembled at this time, and all of the new parts have arrived. Now I need see how it is...

the lower shaft (hook) gears should be no problems for any trained tech to replace and should not need any shafts to be removed. the pattern selector is usually sold as a module and factory set which is why you are getting the high quote as there is no guages or info on these settings. if you have the parts now have you gone back to the original repairman as i assume you have already paid for some of the work and this would be cheepest option for you. the last option is to send it to babylock as they have a repair techs who would be able to sort it out for you

My mom has a White Model 1927, in which she use between 5 to 10 times when the machine broke. ( My mother has over 40 yrs experience in sewing. She use to make alot of my clothes when I was young.) When...

If, you turned the machine hand wheel away from you, you mess up the timing and I suspect that is the problem. If, I were you instead of investing another dime in the old machine, look into a new one from a place that gives lessons, I picked up a terrific one at JoAnn Fabrics, a Singer 7258 Stylist, for $199 and got a free lesson on it. It makes my $1000, Kenmore seem like an old truck and can do way more without having to adjust everything in sight . Good luck to you and your daughter.
