The flashing "initializing" means you have to download new software. There's a "help" feature on the RCA site. I put it in quotes on purpose - I spent hours and dozens of E mail messages with the "helper" who was not helpful, dealing as she was, I admit, a technical dummy. I told her that at the start. She'd give me step 5 then step 3 and oh, yeah, you have to sign in...not mentioned before. I bought this thing only to download books free from my library and was proud that I managed that process - then the thing stopped working. I gather this will happen ALL the time! Frequent updates. Why? I'm now in the market for a less demanding device unless someone can help me with this thing. I did not keep the receipt and cannot take advantage of the RCA offer to do it for me (this time - what about the future?). Any geeks out there who can help me?

Your firmware went bad.
Just got to the RCA website.
http://www.rcaaudiovideo.com/
search your make and model
download the firmware.
Then hook you mp3 player to usb device of your computer.
After mp3 is hooked to computer
Install the newly downloaded firmware.

When I try to turn on the player a message comes up "Profiling requires 20MB free space. Shutting down"

Unplug the mp3 from the USB
press and hold the menu button for 10 seconds
release then press and hold the play button
-- while holding the play button plug it back in. Wait until it says intializing, then release the play button and press start.

It use to say intializing and now it will not come

Sounds like there is likely a firmware issue. Try downloading the firmware update from here:
http://voxrightnow.custhelp.com/app/answers/detail/a_id/2558

Follow the instructions describing how to perform the firmware install.

Note: Be sure to back up any important media you have on your player before starting the reinstall of the firmware.

My mp3 is just straight up broken

Out dated anyway...replace; cost between $9.99 to $14.99 (512) or $14.99 to $24.99 (1gig) or higher. Walmart or other dept stores..even walgreen have them on sale. Most cheap units cannot be repaired or cost to much to do so. Please forgive me if you don't agree. This is not a reflection on your ability to purchase a higher cost MP3..just a cost saving solution.

MY RCA TH1101 DOES NOT WANT TO TURN ON

I would first check to see if by holding it he did not put in in lock mold. If he did not check the battrey it could be weak. If that is not it then if you have a MicroSd card check to see it did not get jamed in to hard. And last I hate to say if all the rest does not work he may have broke it sorry.
