If by FN and Num Lock you meen FN and F11, then that is not it. I have tried that.

Thank you very much though and if you think of anything else please let me know.

Half of the keyboard of toshiba equim laptop is not working normally

This might be an age issue or the keys under the keyboard is aged that it stops working or if say like someone spilled something on the keys damaging the board under the keys I recommend replacing the keys or use a USB pluged keyboard

Some of the keys on my Toshiba laptop don't actually type what is represented on the key e.g. the @ and " characters are transposed and I can't find the back slash character anywhere - and I need it...

Hello, it's probably a UK keyboard set for US operation...or vice versa! Assuming you're using XP (you don't specify what you're running):
Open up Control Panel, select 'Regional and Language Options', then select 'Languages' tab.Click 'Details'. A window opens up and it will indicate which country/keyboard you're currently running. If you're UK and it's set to US, change it,. You may also have to select a different language/keyboard in the drop-down menu box, and you probably will have to perform a reboot to enable the new setting.
If you're not running XP you may have to google for a solution, but it will be similar to the above.
p.s. don't forget to vote :-)

My toshiba laptop is typing wrong characters but my wireless tevion keyboard is o k. Is there a solution to this ?

Sounds like the laptop keyboard went bad and thats why its typing wrong characters. Best way to verify this is to use a USB keyboard on the laptop, if the USB keyboard is typing the correct keys then you know the laptop keyboard is bad. If the USB keyboard is typing the wrong keys as well then you know its a setting in windows that is causing the keys to type wrong characters.

Want to do backward slash; the key only performs # and no slash. also want @ to appear when I use the key showing that sign (currently use the " sign to get it)

The back Slash would be above the ENTER key and the @ sign can be accessed by holding SHIFT and pressing number "2"

In case you are not able to get the desired keys normally. It is possible that there may be something stuck between the keys. I would suggest you to kindly remove the keys and clean the base.
