Question about Canon Rebel XT / EOS 350D Digital Camera

Error 99 in Canon EOS 350 D

I have been experiencing sporatic error 99 messages for the past 1 week with my kit lens and my Canon EF-S, 18-55 mm, 1:3.5 - 5.6 II. This original Lens was bought along with the Camera. I have taken just over 10,000 exposures with my camera in 16 months. If I change the lens, the camera works fine. I have done this, but still the error continues : 1. Carefully clean the 8 gold color lens contact pins on the camera body lens mount with a pencil eraser. Do this while holding the camera so that any eraser dust will not fall into the camera. 2. Take out both batteries. Also remove the CF memory card. 3. With the batteries removed, turn the camera switch on for 3-5 minutes. He said that this clears the memory. 4. Turn the camera off and put the batteries and CF card back in. 5. Re-attach the lens and turn it back on. I get the Err 99 when I try to take a picture with my Canon Digital Rebel XT. It used to happen intermittantly, but lately I can't take a picture at all. I cleaned the lens contacts with an eraser, but it didn't help at all.

Try the following diagnosis steps, in this exact order. This will isolate the cause of the issue: -
1. Turn off the camera.
2. Remove the lens, battery, and CF card.
3. Allow the camera to sit without power for approximately 20 minutes.
4. Insert only a fully charged battery, and turn on the camera.
5. Depress the shutter button as you would to take a picture.

Does the “ERR 99" message appear? If so, the camera may be faulty and requires a service. If it does not, then: -
1. Turn off the camera.
2. Insert the CF card.
3. Turn on the camera.
4. Format the CF card in the camera.
5. Depress the shutter button as you would to take a picture.

Does the “ERR 99" message appear? If so, then the CF card is faulty. Try a different card. If the message does not appear: -
1. Turn off the camera.
2. Clean the gold contacts on the lens by GENTLY rubbing them with a pencil eraser or soft cloth. Keeping the camera face pointing down, also clean the gold contacts on the camera, being careful that you do not let any debris fall into the camera body.
3. Reattach your lens.
4. Turn on the camera.
5. Depress the shutter button as you would to take a picture.

If the “ERR 99" message only appears when one particular lens is attached, then that lens should be examined by a service technician.
If you see the “ERR 99" with a different Canon lens attached, then the camera is faulty and should be serviced.

Usually this is cased by shutter failure or failure of the aperture unit in the lens. Try another lens and see if you get the same error message - that will tell you if the problem is in the camera body or lens

Error 99 on screen cant take picture intermitant

Error 99 is known as Abnormal Mirror operation. Follow the link for help;EOS-1D Mark III/EOS-1Ds Mark III: AF Accuracy Adjustment
EOS-1D Mark III/EOS-1Ds Mark III: Abnormal Mirror Operation (Err 99)

It should be noted that the AF accuracy adjustment advisory is in addition to the previous EOS-1D Mark III AF mirror adjustment service notice. Free repairs are being offered for customers affected by the "Err 99" mirror problem, and Canon is also providing free AF accuracy checks and adjustments for customers experiencing problems with soft focus when using any but the central AF point.

Finally, Canon Japan has published a new manual entitled "EOS-1D Mark III AI Servo Auto Focus Manual" aimed at helping owners understand and get the most from their AF system.

Error 99 on EOS Canon 450D

This is what the people at the canon tech support say to do for error 99

read this!! :)

The guy at tech support listened and then told me that the lens contacts were dirty and to get a pencil with an eraser on the end, just a regular old pencil with a red rubber eraser. Detach the lens from the camera, hold it so that the lens’ gold contacts are pointing down and lightly erase their exposed surface, cleaning them of any hand oil that might have gotten on them.

Do the same thing with the gold contacts inside the camera body. This is a bit harder but it’s doable: just hold camera so lens opening points down so no gunk falls in. Erase lightly. I used a lens cloth and dabbed at the contacts rather than blow them so as not to blow the erasings inside the camera.

I did this to each of my three lenses just to be sure. Lo and behold, it worked

hope this works for you!!!! have a nice day!! :) :)

I have a Canon EOS, 1000D which I purchased in Feb 09. I have an error message coming up on the screen everytime I take a shot (which doesn't record). The error is a Err 99, "Shooting is not possible. Turn...

I did some digging and found that this error is most often a lens communication error. Are you, by chance using a non-Canon lens?

Try the following:

1. Remove the lens and take a picture without any lens on. If you get an ERR 99, then it is a camera issue and you will need to contact Canon for further troubleshooting or repair (ie. not the lens).
2. If you do not get the error with the lens off, try it with a Canon lens or any other lens. If no error, it is a problem with the original lens.
3. If the error occurs on both lenses, clean the lens contacts both on the lens and the camera (refer to your manual).

Hope this helps.

Hi,
I have the same problem with my 1 month old EOS 1000D.
I tried cleaning the lens contacts, but the problem was not solved.

ERR 99 is a generic error. I think this is a common message for a lot of malfunctions.

Try the following steps.

1. Remove the lens and try some clicks.
If you still have the problem then it may not be the fault with lens or contacts.<go for step -2>
If u still have, you have to get it repaired by professionals.

2. Remove the memmory card and try some clicks..(without Card)
Hopefuly u will find it working...
Format your Memmory card & reinstate.

For me the 2nd option worked...(for now !!)

You will get that error when using some lenses other than Canon. A lot of the older Sigma lenses have that issue. Do you get this error when using newer Canon EOS lenses?
