Dell Inspiron 5150 power jack is bad

We have determined that the power jack is bad on my Inspiron 5150. I was told by a computer shop that on the Dell 5150 you cannot just replace the jack....he said that the motherboard would also need to be replaced! He made it sound like on this particular Dell model you
cannot just replace the jack. Any info on this?
Thanks,
Cathy

Replace just the jack. They're for sale on eBay which proves them wrong.

Connectors, especially the smaller ones, are often soldered directly to traces on the motherboard. Unless the board has suffered mechanical damage such as broken epoxy board material or traces damaged to the point a new jack cannot be installed, I disagree with your shop's assessment.
If they did not remove the board for inspection, they can hardly state whether it is repairable or not. If the board is in fact damaged, you won't like the cost of replacing it.

I've never worked on a laptop that you could replace the power connector on the laptop itself. The connector is soldered onto the motherboard and the computer shop was right. If you're daring enough, you could find a willing electronics shop such as a TV repairman to solder the connection back on with the right equipment. Replacing the motherboard would be the "right" way to repair it however.

Dell inspiron elec cord isn't firm so power turns off

Maybe it's the DC Jack that the power cord plugs into. If the jack is loose then you will experience the issue you are having.

Maybe your DC Power Jack which is where the power cord plugs into the computer is bad. Take an ink pen and push the tip inside the jack and see if the little pin wiggles, if so the jack is bad. You'll have to take the laptop apart to fix it. Most times it is soldered onto the motherboard, so you will have to desolder the old and solder a new one.

Battery won?t charge and AC adaptor not recognized

I have a Dell Inspiron 6000 that just turned two years old.

After one year, my dell 6-cell battery started to falter, so Ipurchased a new 9-cell battery. This worked fine until a couple ofmonths ago when I noticed that my 65W adaptor was frayed. I bought anew 65W Dell Inspiron 6000 ac adapter andit worked well for about a week until I noticed that my battery wasn’tcharging at times. If I was patient, or unplugged the adapter andplugged it back in, the battery began charging and all was saved.

This lasted only a short time until my Dell Inspiron 6000 batterywouldn’t charge at all for long periods of time, and sometimes thecomputer wouldn’t turn on, even if plugged into the wall. I thought itmight still be the adaptor, so I borrowed a fully functioning 90W Delladapter from a family member to test the system. This worked better, but still not great.

When I removed the battery and started only fromAC power, the functionality was also intermittent. Usually, if thecomputer actually started, I received the start-up error “The Inspiron 6000 AC AdapterType could not be determined, etc. etc. etc.” After pressing F1, thecomputer booted, but if the battery wasn’t in, the computer didn’tusually last long before shutting off. Unsure if maybe the battery wasthe problem, I put the 6-cell Inspiron 6000 batteryback in, and it too wouldn’t charge, although (together with the 90Wadapter) my computer would at least start more consistently if pluggedin. The error remained however, and sometimes the system stopsrecognizing power and switches to my ever dwindling battery power untilthe adapter is recognized again.

The problem is with the jack on the motherboard inside our Inspiron 6000’s. This is the jack you plug your power plug into on the back of the laptop.

Somehow the jack gets worn and does not make correct contact withthe laptop so the Laptop does not see the power supply as a legit Dellbrand. So the powersupply will not charge the laptop battery and run the laptop at the same time.

A bad connection between DC-IN power jack on the system board and the system board is a very common problem with dell pa 12,dell e1505 and Dell Inspiron 6000notebooks. If your laptop is out of warranty, then you can fix theproblem by resoldering DC-IN jack on the system board. If it’s stillunder warranty, it would be fixed at no charge to you. Problem symptoms:

  • Laptop randomly shuts down without any warning.
  • Power LED and battery charge LED start flickering when you wigglethe power cord or the AC adapter tip on the back or your laptop.
  • The battery will not get charged.
  • When you plug ac adapter for laptop, the laptop appears to be dead and there is no LED * activity at all (DC-IN jack on the system board is broken).
To fix the problem, you have to take your laptop apart, remove the system board to resoleder or replace the DC-IN jack. dell pa 12 and Dell Inspiron 6000 disassembly guides will help you to remove the system board. Take a closer look at the power jack on the system laptop board witha magnifying glass. In most cases you get the power problem because ofa bad connection between the DC jack and the system board, you’ll see acrack between the DC jack connector and the system board.

Dell Inspiron 5160. When plugged in then power light lights up (before hitting the power button like my 5150) and the battery light is amber. The 5160 will not do anything - not power on at all.

Hello.

The most common reasons for power issues are the battery, power jack and power adapter/cord.

Power off and remove the battery. If the laptop powers on with just the adapter connected, your battery is faulty.

If you move/wiggle the power adapter at the point where it connects to the laptop, and the power goes off and on, the power jack is the problem.

The power jack is inside the laptop and either needs soldering or replacement. If a power jack problem, it should be addressed by someone knowledgeable.

If no change, the power adapter is probably faulty and needs replacement.

Hope this helps.

Flashing cursor on inspiron 5150

I assume the power LED is on when you boot up the laptop and the power adapter is OK.
If I understand you, the RAM module is in memory slot A and not in slot B. If not the RAM module needs to be in slot A.
When a laptop doesn't the RAM module may only needs re-seating or the RAM module is faulty.
Re-seat the RAM module, and if this then take the RAM module and get it tested at your friendly computer shop.

DELL Inspiron 5150 isnt booting

If it doesn't respond at all with no ram or hdd, it is likely that the board is in fact dead.....sorry. When you say you found a broken pin, I assume you mean one of the contacts from the power jack to the main board had a cracked solder joint and you resoldered it. If this is the case, try disconnecting and reconnecting the connector from the lcd panel to the mainboard. It may just not be making contact. Also, if you boot up with the hd installed, do you see the hd activity led flashing like at a normal boot? If not, sounds like a dead board. Try pulling the optical drive too if you haven't already. Try connecting to an external monitor too.

Hope this helps!
