Question about Rio Carbon MP3 Player

1 Answer

Rio Carbon I have had my Rio Carbon for some time, A couple of weeks ago when booting the system (turning it on) it started out OK with the RIO on the screen but would not boot. On the screen on the left side is oneword "upgrader" all in lower case, just below the middle of the screen. I reset the system and it booted. Now resetting does not work. it goes through the part where RIO comes on the screen then after a little while the word upgrader comes on. I can shut the machine off using the on/off button when I turn it back on same thing happens. If you know a way out of this let me know.

Re: Rio Carbon

You will have broken the hard drive,

Try replacing it with a CF card,

Everybody says that this does not work but it definitely does!

My Rio got dropped and I completely buggered the hard drive so after reading many forums saying that it didn't work I read one that said that someone had told them that sandisk ultra II ones worked (very vague!)

Because I had nothing to lose I went out and bought a 1GB sandisk Ultra II CF card. I then took apart my rio and replaced the hard drive with the CF card. Still not thinking it was going to work I plugged it into my computer and installed the latest firmware (from the rio website) and then HEY PRESTO!!!!!! it works.

I have yet to try an 8GB ultra II card but when I do i will keep you posted.

If you don't believe me then I don't blame you but If you send me a request then I can send you pictures and more details...

Rio will live on

Hope this helps

Carbon Pearl: Invalid Argument

Try accessing the rio's hard drive through my computer to see if it can find the songs: they will be in a folder aptly called music within your rio carbon.

If this doesn't help then if it is picked up via my computer you could try wiping and rebooting your rio, read:

You may have to change the firmware for the rio carbon pearl but this is easy to find on their website.

Hope this helps,

Unable to turn it on

Make sure it's charge up, then use a paperclip to 'reboot' it.
Do not stick it in the front 'pinhole' because that is the mic.
The hole you want is on the top of the unit, to the right of center.
My Carbon has locked up a couple times while playing, and that clears it up.

Rio Carbon Stuck in Upgrader Mode

Hi Allyson,
This is a problem which I have encountered alot with my Rio Carbon.
A solution which always works for me is to hold the player face down in my left hand and then slap the back of it with my right palm a little harder than I would if I was winding a baby.
Best wishes, I hope this works for you as it does for me.

You have to determine the exact model of your unit and download the firmware from Again you must choose the exact model. There are two ways of updating firmware updater or internet updater. complete instructions are also available. further you would need to connect your Rio to a PC to perform the upgrade. Good luck and pls post back should you need further information. Kind regards.

Rio pearl directory corrupted

first, and this is always good: If available, firmware for the Rio Carbon can be downloaded online. Second, this might be the problem: The Rio Carbon communicates with your computer differently in MTP mode than it does in MSC mode. When in MTP mode, the Rio Carbon cannot display hidden files in folders, cannot allow transfers to the root Rio Carbon directory, and cannot allow the creation of new folders. (Folders can be transferred to the Rio Carbon using drag-and-drop and copy-and-paste methods.) To use traditional folder options, change the Transfer Mode settings to put the Rio Carbon in MSC mode. Last, "..Removing the Rio Carbon from a USB connection before Idle is displayed on the screen may result in a corrupting the player's file system. If for any reason you suspect that your Rio player's file system has been corrupted, reformatting the player will restore the file system to its original state..."
