Try another cd. If that cd works then it's not the cd drive. The cd-rom may not be the right type of media (i.e. a +r or -r when you can only read one or the other). ALso look on the back of the disk for scratches, blemishes, and finger prints. Try to buss them out with just a cotton ****, papertowel, or a towel just as you would a pair glasses.

My cd-rom location do not show up on my Dell Dimension 8250 computer devices. Why

Click start control panel administration tools computer management device manager scroll down cd-dvd rom drives you might see a yellow question /exclamation mark ? ! or a red X right click to update driver

You might have to physically unplug the leads for this cd/dvd restart your computer then plug them back this should activate the found new hardware wizard

If this does not fix the problem it might be a registry problem
"you only need to do the following"
if you cant see your disk drive in windows explorer

Close all open programs

Click on Start, Run, and type regedit and press Enter
Click on the plus signs (+) next to the following folders

HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE

SYSTEM

CurrentControlSet

Control

Class

{4D36E965-E325-11CE-BFC1-08002BE10318}

This folder is the DVD/CD-ROM Drive Class Description in the registry. Look for any of the following names in the right hand column.

Upper Filters

Lower Filters

Upper Filters.bak

Lower Filters.bak

If any of the above keys shown in step 4 are listed, right-click on them and choose Delete

After deleting the keys, close the registry editor
Reboot your computer

Open My Computer and check to see if your CD or DVD drives have returned. You may also want to open Device Manager and verify that the yellow exclamation and error code on the CD or DVD drive is gone.

Hope this helps.

I have a Dell Inspiron 9200 that does not reconize my cd/dvd drive. What would be the estimate cost for this repair.

Hello there:
Your drive may not necessarly be bad , what i would do is open the case and switch the ribbon from the harddrive and place it on the cd rom and then place the one that was on the cd rom and put it on the harddrive and boot the computer into the bios and see if the cd rom is now showing up.,
If so good which may mean that the ribbon cable that was originally attached to the cd rom may not be good .
But if still nothing than you can put every thing back the way it was and if the ribbon cable that was attached to the cd rom originally has a extra end to hook up to the cd rom try to use it and see what happnes if still nothing than yes replace the drive they usually run about 30 to 60 dollars ok?
best regards michael

Cannot get CD-ROM to work,to come up on screen.

Ok with that you need to insert the disc and then go into the my computer section of your computer and then in the CD rom drive you should see the disc and you will click on it to start the process. However if that does not work then your CD rom drive is defective and you need to purchase a new one.

My drive

The first thing to do if you have'nt already is check the ide cables connected aren't loose, then; right click on the cd rom in system properties and uninstal it, re-boot the system and let the pc find the cd drive again and try again. Failing that there is a cdrom checker on the microsoft web site, although you will have to search for it, as i can't remember the page, or if you use nero burning rom, it's got a drive checker also. If you have to buy another cdrom they are very cheap and easy to fit.
