Hey, Kev ... I think it could be that the printer heads need cleaning ... is that something I can do?

This means the black ink is running low and the printer is tryin to resolve this issue with bringing colour to take half of the black ink cartidges process, this just saves on ink, its usually called ecconomical mode, you can turn off this feature. or alternatively this may be cause by low ink in general, try replacing the ink cartridge.

hope this helps.

no problem, economic mode should be in the printer settings in the original printer program drivers. for instance, my printer settings were defaultly placed beside my clock on the windows start bar, this feature keeps my printer drivers up to date aswell, theoritically it should be there if you have the driver set installed, most printers will not work without a driver set installed on the computer so im certain your must have it.

its usually called ecomonical mode but it maybe called something like "ink sparing mode" or something like that depending on your printer.

    hope this helps

that could also be the answer, the printer heads need cleaning from time to time as the printing tracks can blend together and cause incorrect printing.

using your printer options you can run a printer head align program to re-align the heads. its easy to do, it basically just prints out a page of lines so that the heads reposition themselves correctly again (just remeber the printer needs paper to do this).

    hope this helps

Cannot print in color from my documents UNLESS I open it in Paint. Just get a blue line at top of page. Working fine for ages. Replaced all cartridges. Black is fine

If you can print in color from Paint, then it's not your printer.
When you go to print from your other applications, check all of the tabs in the printer set up area for "greyscale", and make sure that's not checked. Sometimes it will say, "black only" instead of "greyscale"

Why is there a black line on all documents that i print?

The 2 most common causes for lines on this machine areA) Dirty **** Glass ( This would only affect copies not internal or computer printed jobs)B) Worn Drum Unit
First make a copy off the large glass and see if you get a line still, if not try running it through the document feeder. If the line is present through the feeder but not off the large glass. Clean the small strip of glass to the left of the large copy glass and this should resolve the line.
If lines show up regardless of how or what you print/copy open the left door of the machine and you should see in the lower area a handle with a blue sticker on it. By grabbing both the front and rear handle of the unit remove it by pulling straight out and lifting slightly. If this blue/green cylinder has any tan colored lines or marks on it then the drum is worn and needs replaced.

I am scanning a photo. I have translucent lines running horizontal through the picture before i print it.

Documents scanned/copied from the document feeder pass over a thin glass area where scanning occurs. Clean this area if sent faxes, copies or scans have black or white vertical lines.
  1. Lift the document cover to expose the platen glass.

  2. Wipe the ADF scan area (C) with a clean, soft, lint-free cloth moistened with water.

  3. Then wipe with a clean, soft, dry, lint-free cloth making sure there are no residues left, especially on the platen glass.

  4. Close the document cover and make a copy of a text document to confirm the black line has disappeared.

If your documents look good when they are printed then the printer is working just fine and you dont have to be concerned about the ink use.

If the printer was not using the other cartridges correctly, then you would see areas that were missing color or were the wrong color when you tried to print. If the ink on a cartridge was not flowing freely the printer would stop printing and display error codes until the problem was corrected.

Being these things are not happening, I think it is safe to assume that it is working properly.

To correct the problem with the black line on the side, try cleaning your print heads and using the maintenance features on your printer. To access these features find the "menu" button on the printer and push it. Then scroll the features displayed by using the arrow keys on the printer until you see "maintenance". Then push the "ok" or "enter" button on the printer and continue using the arrow keys to find the cleaning options for print heads. Follow the instructions for cleaning the print heads and repeat the process a second time for good measures.

Regular maintenance of the printer should eliminate the black line problem and provide better printing results.

Not printing after color cartridge ran out - new black cartridge installed.

Yes, this printer has fixed printheads and must have ink in each color to prevent damage to the printheads. Even when printing black only each color is spit in the servicing area to keep the printhead unclogged.
