Question about Computers & Internet

I have just bought a Maxtor Portable Storage external hard drive 500. There were no instructions included, and I just want to know how to operate it. Can any one help this fairly non-technical pensioner? Robbie

Hey there Robbie

The Maxtor externals are normally very easy to set up so this shouldnt take long.

1.) Remove all packaging and im going to assume you have the following.

a.) USB Cable
b.) Power Supply
c.) Actual Harddrive

2.) Plug the power supply into a socket and into the relevant hole at the back of the hardrive.

3.) Do the same with the USB cable however connect this to your PC

4.) You will see the 'Found new hardware' box appear which will attempt to install your device. This should do the rest for you.

5.) Once the 'Found new hardware wizard' has completed go to Start>My computer> and you should now see your device in the list of devices.

Good luck Robbie get back to me if you have anymore problems

Carl

If its brand new first u gotta format the drive. to format the drive plug in the usb cable to the computer and the other end to the HDD(external storage) plug the power adaptor if there is one. it will detect the HDD now u need right click my computer and click manage> then click disk management. now one dailog box will appear. follow the onscreen instructions and when asked to format select quick format.

Hitachi External Hard Drive 500 g where do i get the driver for it ?

This is what I get from Hitachi about the USB drives:

The External USB Storage and Portable USB Storage products do not need additional drivers to function in WinXP/2000/Vista, or the Mac system 9.2.2 or OSX. These operating systems already include the drivers needed for USB storage devices.

Looks like you don't need a driver. This is what I expected.

I need to know the power rating for a Maxtor 160GB external Hard Drive for use with a Yamaha PSRs-900 keyboard. Yamaha requires the rating to be not greater than 500-600mA

The Maxtor STM901601EHD301-RK is part of the Maxtor Basics Portable family.

It uses a 2.5 inch Internal harddrive inside. (2 and a half inches across the Width. Same size used for a laptop. Desktop's use 3.5)

It connects with a USB Style A male plug, via the USB cable.
It's has a 160GB storage capacity, has an 8MB Buffer, (Cache), and an External Data Transfer Rate of 60 MegaBytes per Second.

Other than that, I find no more information from Seagate, (Seagate bought out Maxtor, and has the data base for Maxtor products)

http://hddlist.com/maxtor/all/maxtor_basics_portable

What I do know in reference to your question.
I know that the USB 2.0 technology uses 5 Volts DC. The Positive pin on the USB plug will support up to 5 Volts.

http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/File:USB.svg

[Viewing a USB-A style plug, view it with the white plastic spacer at the bottom. Open part at top. The Positive pin is all the way to the right. The Negative pin all the way to the left. The Data + pin is on the left next to the Negative pin. The Data - pin is on the right, next to the Positive pin]

The Maximum current draw is 500 mA for a USB 2.0 port.
[ Current is rated in Amperes, or Amp's. You are looking at Millionths of an Amp.
Milliamp, or abbreviated as mA]

This would lead me to believe that the Maxtor Basics Portable external harddrives will not use more than 500 Milliamp's.

However I do not feel comfortable, telling you that it is okay to use your Maxtor STM901601EHD301-RK, on your Yamaha PSR2-900 keyboard. Would hate to be mistaken, and have you burn out the finals of your keyboard.

I do feel comfortable with the following suggestion.

What about transferring as much data as you can from the Maxtor Basics Portable, to a USB thumb drive? They have large thumb drives now, and hold a lot of data.

Most programs will fit on a large USB thumb drive.
Or am I missing the point somewhere?

How to Connect Maxtor OneTouch 4 Mini 320Gb to PC

I have one as well running along with a PC. PCs and Macs are formatted differently. Go to www.maxtor.com and create a search for reformatting from a Mac to a PC with your Operating System in the search as well. Should have no problems after doing that. It will tell you and or show you where and how to reformat.
