Acer cd-rw dvd-r errors

On first rebooting my Acer Aspire AST180, the cd/dvd drive works fine. However after the machine has been used for various other task for awhile the drive will not recognize that a disk has been loaded and therefore will not read it. All this causes me to reboot to assure that drive will work and is both annoying and inconvenient.

The device description is: HL-DT-ST DVD-RW_GSA-H41NATA

When I access the device properties, the window tells me the device is working properly(which of course it isn't).

After loading a CD or DVD, the drive grinds away and later tells me that Windows Explorer is not responding. After I reboot the system it will then work for a period of time. I am not a heavy user of the device and am able to finish a session before it acts up again. However if I spend much time at all doing other functions such as email or web surfing, it will most assuredly act up again. My guess is some kind of software glitch, but I am far from an expert. Have checked for driver updates, but keep being assured that the device driver is current.

    Help please!!!!!!! gmckay2

Vista does not give you the start, run, browse sequence option. Or am I missing something? gmckay2

I believe that my problem is fixed. After cleaning the DVD lens it appears that things are working now. I just don't understand how upon reboot I could read discs if it was a dirty lens problem. I guess that as long as it works I shouldn't question the logic.

Welcome-
if you go into the "computer" option in the start menu a list of drives will then appear. then you should be able to double click on the dvd/cd drive to activate it again. and i would try cleaning the lens with a cleaning disk.

thank you

Expert Ginko is correct this can be a problem with the drive lens that's why its not reading any disc now and using a lens cleaner will be a good option because this is not a driver problem sicne windows is detecting the drive correctly...

Some dvd drives are finicky... make sure the dvd or cd is extremely clean with no smudges

Sounds more like a Windows problem , in any case try first cleaning lens with a cleaner disk, this if it does not read cds.

try first using a DVD lens cleaner , sometimes dirty lens problems can cause burning software to freeze after a while.

It looks more like a problem related to windows setup, in this case to fix it you need a fresh Windows installation.

DVD-RW drive

You should try reinstalling drivers before tossing the drive but I have noted the increasing number of DVD drive complaints; they are catching up with power supply failures.
