Hello, I have a Gateway laptop MT6728 and the DVD drive doesn't read at all. even original DVD / CD.
The small light indicating that the drive is working when the disk inserted is working, but no reading at all.

Your operating system shouldn't need a new driver for that. CD drives are recognized configured automatically. You can try cleaning the laser lens on the CD Drive with a CD/DVD laser lens cleaning kit. If that doesn't work then you'll need to replace the drive.
Are you sure yours is a DVD player? It could only be a CD-CD writer, which will NOT play DVDs.
Open your control panel ->system->hardware->device manager and click on the DVD/CD-ROM drives icon. The listed devices will tell you if you really have a dvd player or not. If you do really have a dvd player, try a different dvd
2TB hard drive is the largest one you can put into that laptop. You can buy them from compusa and they are less then $200. Make sure you get a SATA hard drive. It will fit in and then the BIOS will recognize it and you can install windows on it and have plenty of space for movies and such.
Sounds like it needs a new power source or motherboard. Since it is immediately turning off after the red lights then it's probably a hardware problem since there is no time for the software to do anything.
I had the same problem, this is what worked for me.... I opened the cd/dvd drive on the side of my laptop and gently cleaned the small laser and hey presto it worked, can now erase, read and play my discs.Give this a try it only takes a few seconds. Good Luck
