Whenyou connect the power adapter into the laptop, does the power LED lightup? If not then -The battery adapter or the adapter's power lead or the laptop's powersocket could be faulty.Check power adapter's DCplug that connects into the laptop power socket with a multi-meter, the voltageshould be slightly higher than the voltage that is printed on the label on thebottom of the adapter. If the voltage is zero or way below the voltage that isprinted on the label then the power adapter is faulty and needs to be replaced. If the adapter is OK thenconnect it to the laptop and power it up, then look at the power/batterycharging LED light and wriggle the power plug in the laptop's powersocket. If the power/battery LED light flashes and in a certain position thisLED light stays firm, then the power socket is either faulty or it has a drysolder joint where it is connected to the motherboard. This can be repaired but itrequires the laptop to be completely dismantled to get at this power socket andrepair. If you cannot DIY then I suggest you get a quote first.

Nikki, it's a hardware issue and you should seek hp's help. Chances are you may not get but look for similar unit on craigslist or kijiji etc. You might get lucky. Meantime make sure wires are secure. One thing I would do is this. If the pieces are there, glue them with Crazy glue or similar strong adhissive.

On screen saying re attach power source, no function.

Does it have the battery in it? If so, plug the powercord in to charge. If not, put the battery in it. If it still doesn't work with battery and power cord: I would think either the battery or the powercord is not working properly. Most likely the powercord.

Can't get power to my laptop.don't know if it's the laptop, or the powercord

Look for a friend around and trouble shoot swapping the power cords. But I believe it must be your power cord that should be replaced.

Do the trouble shooting before replacing.

Which powercord to use?

In the bottom of the laptop you can find the input required, make sure the voltage matches the requirement and the connection is the right way.

from what you said I can't tell if its too stong, can you adjust the voltage? look in the bottom it is documented there on a label.
