Does it have the options for starting in safe mode, but no matter what, it reboots?

If so, use a winxp cd ( asuming you have winxp installed) and boot from cd like your going to install windows. When it loads it should have an option screen thats blue with white text.

Select R for repair. it will close and go to the command prompt. Then type in ( chkdsk C: /P ) exactly.

Let it run the repair and when done, type: Exit or just reboot, remove disk and let it boot normally. when that screen comes up with white text saying to select boot option, just pick, Start windows normally.

It should then work fine and go into windows.

If this fixes it, then some how your boot files got erased and the repair fixed them. This happens alot with Dell computers. Its random and usually happens after installing something. So remember how to do this in case it happens again,

Good Luck

Dell inspiron one touch screen stuck in diagnostic mode

HI,
You were correct in pressing ctrl+f11 but perhaps you did not press at the correct time. If in following these first two steps you do not get the recovery console, it may not have been installed on your computer.

1 Turn on the computer.
2 When the Dell splash screen appears during the computer startup process, press and hold <Ctrl> and then press <F11>. Then, release both keys at the same time.
3 In the Dell PC Restore by Symantec window, clickRestore. Alternatively, press <Tab> to highlightRestore, and then press <Enter>.
4 When a warning message appears stating that all data will be lost, click Confirm, or press <Tab> to highlight Confirm and then press <Enter>.

The Progress window will appear. Once the restore process starts, Dell PC Restore by Symantec usually takes about 8 to 10 minutes to finish.

When the restore process is complete, the following message will appear:
The system recovery process was successful.
5 Click Finish or press <Tab> to highlight Finish and then press <Enter> to restart the computer.
The software is now installed as it was when the computer was first received.
Thanks.

Hi,

If your system is stuck on the Windows Start Screen Screen you can try to boot using Safe Mode by restarting the computer and tapping F8 while it is booting. When it successfully load the Operating system you can disable some startups on the machine. Click on Start then click on RUN, type MSCONFIG on the dialog box located on the lower left of your screen. Then Click on the SERVICES tab. Put a tick on Hide All Microsoft Services then click on Disable All button. Disabling some startup software may fixed the problem. Restart the computer see if it will works. If not then you need to Reinstall the Operating System to your machine.

Thanks for using Fixya.

After (successful) restoration of desktop 838GM, boot-up get stuck at black screen with message that "NTLDR is compressed, press ctrl alt del to restart". When I do the ctrl alt del, computer reboots but...

The startup files are corrupted. You need to put the windows disk in the DVD and make the computer boot off that when it starts up. Booting off the DVD may need to be set in the BIOS if the machine does not do it automatically.
When the window comes up you select install windows.
Second option is repair my computer. Then follow the prompts.

  • Startup Repair is a Windows recovery tool that can fix certain problems, such as missing or damaged system files, that might prevent Windows from starting. Startup Repair is located on the System Recovery Options menu, which is on the Windows Vista installation disc. If your computer has preinstalled recovery options, it might also be stored on your computer's hard disk. For more information, see Startup Repair: frequently asked questions and What are the system recovery options in Windows Vista? If your computer does not include Startup Repair, your computer manufacturer might have customized or replaced the tool. Check the information that came with your computer or go to the manufacturer's website.
  • Change restart settings in safe mode. If your computer is stuck in a loop where Windows fails, attempts to restart, and then fails again repeatedly, restart your computer in safe mode and select the Disable automatic restart on system failure checkbox. For more information, see Advanced startup options (including safe mode).
  • Reinstall. If no other options have solved the problem, and you are sure that your computer's hardware is functioning normally, you might need to reinstall Windows. A custom (clean) installation of Windows will permanently delete all of the files on your computer and reinstall Windows, so only use this option if all other recovery options have been unsuccessful. After the installation, you will need to reinstall your programs and restore your files from backup copies. For more information, see Installing and reinstalling Windows‌.

The screen is stuck on windows media edition and the mouse and keyboard(wireles) do not work

Sounds like your computer is locking up. Try booting into safe mode by pressing f8 before it boots the windows. If you get into safe mode try removing all startup items by going to start> run> Type msconfig and go to the start tab and disable all startup items and restart. If pressing f8 doesn't work I would try new batteries in the keyboard or get a wired keyboard. You could have bad hardware like memory or hard drive that are the two biggest causes of a computer freezing.

When we turn the laptop on, it goes to startup screen and then gets stuck in a cycle/loop of loading (including which startup mode you want)

Most likey a Windows fill of some sort is corrupted. The best solution would be to just reformat the computer and lose all data.

Alternatively you could use a Linux Live CD to boot from the CD-ROM and access the hard-drive to perhaps save any documents. If you don't know how to do this yourself I'd recommend carrying it to a facility that is fluent in computer support. Try a local college's IT Department.
