I connect my camcorder and all I get is 'connecting...' forever. I am running Vista Home Premium 64... Maybe I don't have the right software installed?

Mine does the same thing. After it says "connecting" on the LCD of the camcorder, there is nothing to actually do on the camcorder. With the Sony SR42 software installed (supposed to come with the camcorder on purchase-but maybe you can also find it for free online), the software called Sony Picture Utility (which is part of the big packge of software) opens up automatically and offers to either burn your photos/videos to directly to a compact disc, or to import them onto the computer's harddrive.
That's how it happens for me.I'm not-tech savy or anything. Hope this helps.

I'm sorry for the difficulties you're experiencing in connecting the Camcorder to the Computer. Please follow the below steps carefully and check if you're getting the USB Select Screen on the LCD screen.
  1. Connect the Camcorder to the Computer.
  2. Power OFF the Camcorder and switch ON after 10 seconds.
  3. Check the LCD screen to see the USB Select screen.
If the issue persists, please disconnect the Camcorder from Computer. Reset it to default settings and then connect it again.
Perform Reset by following steps:

1. Locate the RESET button behind the LCD panel of the camcorder. 2. Use a pointed object (like a ballpoint pen) to press and hold the RESET button for 2-3 seconds. 3. After 2-3 seconds has elapsed, release the RESET button.
Also try connecting to a different USB port on the Computer.
Thanks for understanding. Please get back to me with the exact Operating System that you're using if you require further assistance.

you can use the supplied USB cable of the camcorder and connect it to a Personal Computer. You'll need a software program (video editing software) to synchronize your video file from your camcoder to your PC. Other uses TV Capture card for this process.
