Question about Washing Machines

1 Answer

I have a 20 year old Maytag washer. It is in EXCELLENT condition. We have never had a problem with it! A few weeks ago, the spin cycle began to have a growling noise resembling a bearing. It sounds like a freight train. This only happens in the spin cycle. Any ideas. I am suspecting a bearing .

Thanks. I was afraid that it might required a "special tool" to remove the agitator. Do you know if the agitator release is from under the drum or inside the drum? I could n't find anything except a small 1/8 inch hole on top of the lower part of the agitator.

Thanks for your help. The word on the street for the new front loaders is not good - expensive and unreliable! We also have a main floor laundry room.

Your old Maytag is a much better machine than the new Maytag's, but replacing the drum bearing and seal is a somewhat expensive and rather difficult job, requiring a couple special tools. Not usually a do it yourself job. Unless you really love that machine, it's time for a new one. The average life of a washer is about 9 years. Look into the front load models which use much less water and spin out over twice as fast as your old top load machine. LG is the top rated by consumer reports, but you don't have to buy the top of the line models to get the the direct drive motor with 7 year part warranty. Other companies make a pretty good product also.
Don't bother rating this "solution" as anything but a FixYa lowers my rating.

The agitator is locked down with a set screw, usually a 1/4 hex head about 1/3 of the way down from the top of the agitator. You will need the special tool plus a hammer or mallet, to remove the nut holding the inner tub, or break it. (it is a left hand thread) Top cover of outer tub needs to come off before inner tub can be removed.

Why is Maytag Centennial 3.2 cu. ft. SuperSize Capacity Plus Top Load Washer shaking during spin cycle

check to make sure it is sitting level on the floor and one leg adjuster hasnt backed in making it shake. But even when you stick cloths in evenly they can bunch up during cycles.

Leaking water on spincycle

I have the same problem with my washer. The problem just began a few weeks ago. It is splashing out the front left corner of the tub and running down the inside of washer and then leaking out the bottom of the frame. It is just enough water to be annoying. The washer is about 6 years old.
Model: FAV6800AWW
Serial: 11277017EG

Any ideas??? Help!

Maytag washer makes loud grinding noise during the spin cycle

if it's making a noise then either your drain pump bearing is going out or your thrust bearing is going out (assuming the noise happens in both spin and wash). Tip the washer backwards so that you can get underneath of it. Take the belt off and spin the pump pulley on the right side. This should spin effortlessly.

The middle pulley is the trustbearing pulley. Spin this--- one direction it should have a little bit of resistance--- the other should have more resistance
