I ahd the same problem. If you are using red yellow and white cables, they can't transmit progressive scan. You need a progressive scan TV and the red blue and green cables. Plug the rd blue and green in under the red yellow and red ones at the back of the player, and it should work. Then go to your menu and turn progressive scan off, so you can use the player through the red white and yellow. Hope this helps

Tips for a great answer:
Progressive Scan Video provides the highest resolution
pictures with less flicker and line structure
If you are using the COMPONENT/PROGRESSIVE
SCAN VIDEO OUT jacks, but are connecting the
DVD/VCR Receiver to a standard (analog) television,
set Progressive Scan to Off
If you are using the Component Video jacks for
connection to a TV or monitor that is compatible with a
progressive scan signal, set Progressive Scan to On.
To ON and OFF this function, Press "Setup" to display the setup screen.
Surf through, and hilight "Progressive scan" and press "Ok or Enter"
Here you can set this function ON or OFF. If you wnat to get it OFF, select OFF and press Enter.
