What do the numbers on the Kirby G5 beater bar end caps mean?

The numbers on the beater bar end caps are used to lower the brush down as the bristles wear down. When you bought the machine, the brush roller started in the 1 setting. One year later, after the bristles have worn down, you can move the numbers to 2, then 3, etc.

It's a pretty neat concept by Kirby, it prolongs the life of the roller brush significantly.

Hope this helped you,

My kirby g5 is not picking up, there is no blockage, but suction has dropped significantly, what could be the problem?

Not to question your description of the problem, but are you sure the suction has dropped? Kirbys don't usually lose suction unless there is a mechanical or electrical problem. When you turn the machine on does it fill with air and expand? If so, then you probably have enough suction. If the bag doesn't fill and expand and your machine is extremely noisy then the fan may be broken and need to be replaced. If you see excessive sparking near the bottom of the handle then you may have a motor problem like stuck or too short carbon brushes or a bad armature. On rare occasions, with Kirby owners who live close to a beach area and vacuum large amounts of sand, the sand actually wears down the vanes of the fan enough to make it useless. To check the fan; first unplug your Kirby from the electrical outlet, remove the brush roll nozzle, slowly spin the fan/belt pulley while observing the surface of the fan, look for cracks or breaks. The fan vanes should be about 3/4 of an inch deep.
If none of the above fixes your problem, look at the brush roll and belt. If your belt has not been changed in the last 12 months, install a new belt. If this is the original brush roll, install a new brush roll.

I have a Kirby G5 Vac Cl, the motor will not run. I checked the ac voltage into the vaccum and is o.k. What is it?

I have the same problem with our G5. I check the cord and it's good. Changed the switch, but that actually wasn't the problem. I've tracked my issue down to the motor brushes. When is does run, sometimes blue sparks are seen on the right-side of the motor near the right set of brushes.
I was able to rotate the motor spindle simply by turning the front attachment belt lever (the thing on the front to take off the vacuum head). This rotates the motor just enough to get better contact with the motor brushes.
I'm next going to replace the brushes and see if that fixes my g5. Good luck.

Hi How do I attached the hose onto the upright G5 model?

First, twist the belt lifter dial on the front of your kirby roller brush head counter clockwise to take the belt off the motor fan pulley, then undo the latch at the top of the head to release it from the vacuum body, then take your hose and mount it to the place where the head was hooked onto then lock it down with the latch at the top of the hose. That should get you going.

I need to know how to use the attachments that came with the Kirby. I know how to use the shampoo/vacuum, but not the other attachments or the upholstery cleaner. Does anyone have any idea?

Hello,
I would advise you to ALWAYS to FIRST UNPLUG YOUR VACUUM before beginning any service procedure.
1st, you need to un-hook the lever @ the top of the Kirby head, dial off the belt from the Kirby Vacuum Head using the Kirby emblem in the front of the vacuum, that also serves as a hook/spoon to dial the belt off the fan pulley. Once you have removed the vacuum head you now hook up the attachment hose to use the attachments by locking the attachment hose to the top lever. All regular Kirby attachment will fix on the attachment hose end including the spin brush if you have one with your Kirby --- using the Kirby Shampoo spray the soiled area and use the spin brush to agitate the carpet and or upholstery, try not to use to much water. If you have a Kirby shampooer – use the recovery tank on the exhaust port of the Kirby (this means that the cloth/paper bag needs to come off and install the clear recovery tank. Please refer to the Kirby owners manual for any type of trouble shooting that you might need – or please feel free to contact your local vacuum dealer in the yellow pages or contact your Kirby factory manufacturer listed below:

Kirby Ultimate G will not suck with main brush head attachment

You may need a new belt, it may have stretched enough so it isn't turning the brush roll anymore.

Kirby G5 - Stopped

The carbon brushes in the motor need to be replaced. Very IMPORTANT....... DO NOT run the Kirby anymore until you get this fixed. If you do, the armature will be in danger of being damaged. (and that part is expensive!) The carbon brushes are reasonably priced, and you can use this online guide to get to them and change them. It's a guide for replacing the power switch, but it will help you change the carbon brushes too. Hope I've helped...

Replacing Belt

On the front of the power head is a knob with the KIRBY name on it. Rotate this knob in a counter clockwise direction and it will "lift" the belt off the motor spindle. Release the head lever, only one direction it will turn and remove the head. Turn the head over on its back, turn the KIRBY knob to release the old belt. Remove the brush guard by turning the two release fixtures. Remove the guard. Pry the brush out of the head. Remove the old belt. While the brush is out remove any build up of hair and lint off the ends that's where the bearings are. put a few drops of 3 in One oil on the ends. Put the new belt over the brush and re-install the brush into the head. the brush will go in only one way. With your finger pull the belt into the housing and rotate the KIRBY knob until the pawl inside grabs the belt. Re-install the brush guard by engaging the two metal pieces into the front of the head and pull down backwards over the head and rotate the holding clips back horizontal. re-install the powerhead on the machine, lock it in place and rotate the KIRBY knob clockwise. You should be all set!

My brushes are not turning. We checked the gear and it is turning, but brushes aren't

Take the brushroll out and see if it turns freely just by holding the end. Also make sure that the belt isn't stretched out. Also, before putting the head on the vac, you have to pick the belt up on the "finger" that's in the head. You can verify this by looking into the circle that's cut out of the metal. When the head is affixed to the vac, then turn the belt lifter back around to the proper position and all should be well. If you still need help, you may call us at 1-866-509-1952. Thanks
