Question about Akai PDP-5016H 50 in. HD-Ready Plasma Television

Open Question

Set powers on, snowy picture, no channel info, no signal present

Cable connected- no signal present. no sound either. My guess is either I/O board (in tin shieding can) or tuner board (inside that assembly) is bad or is missing a power supply voltage. Main PS produces about nine distinct voltages- have not measured each going to the I/O module to see if all are present. have no service manual/schematics to follow.
a second guess is the logic control board? maybe set OS is corrupted. All this happened while set was on and working normally- then nothing
note: am an EE, do understand things technical. Am not familiar witrh terms/terminology associated with plasma TV parts/modules.

Hi there

If your man thinks the power supply is down, then replacing it should solve the problem. If it does not, then you should not be charged for that repair, and your original power supply refitted. I would at this point go with what he has said, because it is very difficult outside of getting a look at the set to see what has actually happened. The flashing lights mean something by way of a fault code. I will go off and research that for you now.

checked voltages meter set to AC referenced to chassis VA, VE, etc no voltages.
Do not try to measure voltages on the primary side of the power supply with a meter; you may damage the meter and cause new damage to the supply. There are switching frequencies somewhere between 50,000 - 100,000 Hz and possible voltage peaks of several hundred volts.

Checking AC is only useful before a diode bridge that converts incoming AC into raw DC that is then chopped at higher frequency into an approximate HF AC, coupled to the secondary, then tapped and connected to more diodes to produce DC, finally regulated and sent on its way.
Your plasma set uses some higher voltages that could have caused the cracking sound they heard but the DVD player didn't cause the problem directly; maybe just caused the HV for the display to surge for a moment.
You may have additional fuses on the secondary side of the supply. If test points are accessible there, check for DC voltages and be suspicious of any fuse or test point that measures nothing at all.
I can't tell you which voltages to expect since that varies from one design to another but you should find several lower voltages such as 5 VDC for logic circuits and perhaps a 12 V point. The plasma's HV could be produced from a separate board fed from the AC line or get its supply voltage from the main supply. There aren't many standards to rely on here.

The most likely semiconductor failure would be on the secondary side and diodes come in many different packages, many cylindrical, some in the TO-220 package with a metal flange and mounted on upright aluminum heatsinks. These will have only two leads and there will be some in the same package with three legs. The latter can also be checked statically but unless you know what kind of transistor or regulator (look about the same) you are measuring, you will not be able to ferret out a defective one with any luck.
While you have the set open, check for any dust bunnies that can act as sponges, collect moisture and create a discharge path for higher voltages.

SOURCE: No Picture & No sound. Red LED, Green LED, Red LED.

If the power supply outputs are good! Then I would say the back light inverter is bad! If the screen stays black and does not come on.

Tv picking up channels except its all static, colorless, and loud static noise..

If the set was purchased in the USA it has the USA format which is NTSC--unless the signal is NTSC picture will be in black and white and no sound.

If the signal format there is PAL OR SECAM you will need a converter that takes that and outputs NTSC for the set to work properly there.

In just bought new Toshiba regza 40" Lcd tv and auto tuned it, but the picture is terible , snowy and colours are not good, what to do...

Hello
First of all reset the TV. for that

press and hold the POWER button
on the TV control panel for 5 or more seconds to reset the TV.
Then connect the TV tt any source like outdoor areiel or cable box etc, select the appropriate input, and retune the TV. First of all, connect it to an external antenna, and set it to autotune.

You must configure the ANT/CABLE input source before

programming channels (-left-hand column).

If the ANT/CABLE input signal type is set to Cable, the

automatic channel programming process erases channels

that were previously programmed into the TV's memory.

If the ANT/CABLE input signal type is set to Antenna, the

automatic channel programming process adds newly found

channels to the existing set of programmed channels (and

does NOT erase channels that were previously

programmed into the TV's memory.) To remove an Antenna

source channel from the memory, you must manually delete

it.

To tune the TV to a channel not programmed in the channel

memory, you must use the Channel Number buttons on the

remote control.

Programming channels when the ANT/CABLE input is

configured for Cable will take substantially longer than when

the antenna input is configured for Antenna. This is normal;

however, once channel programming is finished, you should

not have to repeat the programming process again unless
your Cable TV service lineup changes significantly.
Find out the received channels are clear or not. If they are clear, your TV is perfect, and the input device you connects ot the TV is faulty. OK.

New tv connected to cable, suppose to have 52

Hello,
With the cable securely connected to your new TV, go into the Menu setup features and tell the set to AutoProgram all cable channels. It will then search for every signal. This will take a few minutes but give it some time to scan,
If it cannot find anything then you do not have a proper cable or antenna signal.
Cheers

Tv has only snowy screen. Used the remote to

What to do if you have an all snowy picture (blue screen or the TV displays unusable signal-no signal or no sync)
1 – If you are using a digital cable box or satellite receiver (make sure it’s on) and be sure your TV is set for either CH3 or CH4 (which ever you usually view it on). If you usually view it through video inputs (video1 or 2 etc.) make sure the appropriate input is selected.
If you still don’t get a signal see if you get picture using the DVD or VCR (if available) if you do than plug the satellite or Dig. Box temporarily into the place of the DVD (unplug DVD) you may have to use some A/V cables (RCA yel./red/wht like the ones on the DVD) to hook to the tv from the sat./dig. box. If you get a signal then the sat./dig box is ok. If not the Sat./dig box is not sending a signal and is either defective or needs to be rebooted (unplug wait 5 min try again).
2 – If you are using standard cable or antenna (source) if possible check that the source is good by connecting to another TV. Otherwise try running the source into a VCR and then out to the TV using video inputs (RCA yel./red/wht like the ones on the DVD) and then selecting the appropriate input. Try seeing if the VCR plays using standard CH3 (or CH4)
If the VCR plays on video input but not when connected to CH3 (CH4) then the tuner of the TV may be defective – see if you can use the VCR to change channel using the VCR remote.
Be sure to vote/rate me if this helped Thanks!
