Question about Nikon D40 Digital Camera with G-II 18-55mm Lens

1 Answer

Images displaced, cut off at bottom & extra content at top.

When i take pictures with my D40, what i see through the view finder is coming out different when i view the pics in playback. Basically, the bottom of the picture is 'cut-off' and at the top there is 'extra' image. It's as if the picture is moved up? What can i do so that what i look at is exactly what i end up with?

I don't think anything is wrong with your camera. Just check the Manual.
Your camera has a view finder, to make pictures. Yes the little screen on the top left (Backside) As an extra the camera has live view, that can be switched on and off. because the live view consumes lots of power, it is advised to use the view finder. If you want to switch it on, you can do so in the settings menu. There go to the live view en switch it on.

How to use the monitor as a view finder on nikon d40

The Nikon D40 works as SLRs have worked for half a century, providing a viewfinder for composition and framing. The monitor in the back is for menu settings, shooting parameters, and picture review. Only more recent dSLRs (in Nikon's case, starting with the D3 and D300) provide the LiveView capability.

How to take a picture using display instead of view finder

I don't believe there is. Nikon call it Live View in other models, but its not mentioned in the D40 user manual.....

here's the full manual, if you'd like it.

Nikon d40 motnior blank while taking picture.

That's entirely correct. Live view cannot work on SLR's whilst the photo is being taken due to the requirement for the mirror and live view sensor to flip out of the way during image capture.

Live view on SLR cameras is a misleading description, it's really a live preview instead.

Just bought a Nikon D40 Camera and sometimes when I view pictures that have been taken, the pictures get distorted. Is this common or and easy fix. dee

Your pictures are most probably distorted because of camera shake.
If you invest in a Nikon lens with VR = vibration reduction or a Sigma hsm os = optical stabilization, this will allow you to shoot at slower speeds and will reduce camera shake.

The most obvious problem will be shooting in low light conditions without vr or os...this will give blurred images. You will need to up the iso and shutter speed with a wide aperture to achieve more stable images.
Bear in mind, when you raise the iso, you will get noiser images and the Nikon D40 does not handle noise very well - but can be eliminated with software.
Hope this helps.

Cuts off the bottom of my pictures

that happens to my camera also

what i think is happening is that live view uses a digital immage not what the image sensor sees when you take the picture the optical view finder uses the atual immage that the sensor will see

Be aware of using your Flash because it has limit syncronization capability. if your flash synchronization limited only to 250 speed, and you make it 500, the images may turn half lighted and dark.
X synchronization is important to know.
