When powered on I cannot access menu or any other function. The LCD screen remains the same--white with purple streaks. CCD sensor or LCD problem? If LCD can I fix?

Hit the DISP button to turn display on.
If trying to show XXX image, this will become a problem
Make sure you are pointing the camera at something you want to look at versus a white wall.

If all these fails, the camera needs to be serviced.

When you get colored bands on the LCD display, that means that you have either a faulty ribbon cable, or a faulty LCD panel.

When you get no picture on display, and only white screen, or vertical bands , but the camera is working, saving files on the memory card and taking pictures, that means that either the LCD cable/connector, or the dissplay panel may have a problem.

If the problem is the ribbon cable, this may be simply misplaced or defective.

If the problem is the display , then it is faulty and must be replaced.

If you do not know what the problem is you can replace both, the parts are not expensive.

To replace the cable, or the display, both covers (fron t and back) must be removed, if this job is not being done by a qualified technician , there is a good chance to damage the camera in a bad way.

If you want to senrd the camera for repair you can use the phone number listed on the owner manual.

If you want to do it yourself you find disassembly instructions here :

To know if it is a CCD sensor or LCD problem, you take some pictures, if pictures are being saved on memory card, then the CCD is ok.

When is the CCD sensor, you get saved on the memory card the same picture with lines that you see on display, when you have LCD problems the camera often works fine, or does not work at all (if there is short on ribbon cable), but you never get a picture with the weird lines that you see on display.

If camera does not take pictures, and does not work at all , it is not necessarily an LCD fault, but LCD faults are the most common cause for the problem you are describing.

Please try and reset the mode of the image to see if the LCD does not go blank when shown to higher light. Also if there is no issue with the indoor pictures then it is possible that the auto light detection is giving a higher value to reset the image balancing. Shift from Auto to manual mode and try.

Power problem with Canon Powershot SD500

Somehow you have damaged the internal LCD display, or, less likely, a portion of the optics have cracked. In the case of the PowerShot SD500 it will not be worth replacing either unless the camera is still under warranty. Standard warranty is one year.

My Canon Powershot SD630

Dear Peter,

It sounds to me as though your camera is experiencing the early stages of a CCD sensor problem. Users will often experience color changes and/or lines in their LCD screens when viewed in picture taking modes at this stage of the problem. Later on their sensors will ultimately fail completely and they will typicallt get nothing but a black screen.

To differentiate between a sensor problem and a LCD screen problem, try viewing your LCD screen in several different shooting modes (e.g. automatic, manual, program AE, etc) and then view your screen while in your menu (by depressing the menu button in any shooting mode). If you can clearly see your menu (OR, while in playback, pictures that were taken before the issue began) then it is your CCD image sensor and not your LCD screen.

If, however, all of these modes gives you the same distortion, it is your LCD screen itself that has experienced a problem. In either case, however, the primary solution is to send the camera in for service.

If you are under your 1 Year warranty this is usually no problem. If you are out of your warranty period and (and this is a BIG and) are capable of repairing your digital camera yourself, you have the alternate option of ordering just the defective part and installing it yourself. Replacment parts, however, come with no technical support and no instructions so make absolutely sure you are capable of repairing the camera should you choose this lower cost repair option. Hope this helps.

Sincerely,
HeavyDLB
