Dell Precision 490 constant reboot after ghost image completed

I have a Dell Precision 490 with two hard drives. When I install a 64 bit version of windows it installs OK. When I image the machine with a 32 bit ghost image it goes into a constant windows start up screen, then a blue screen, then a reboot. Any clues?

The Ghost image is from a working 490. We decided to just reinstall from CD on the machines that will not accept the original 490 image.

Hello-

I figured out how to ghost a Dell Precision 490 with a 32 bit Windows XP Image! Like you I had the same problem where it would constantly reboot after I imaged it with an existing 490 image. The answer is actually very simple. Boot up your Precision 490 and hit F2 to enter the bios. Select Drives and then SATA Operation, change it to "Raid Autodetect / ATA". Reboot the 490 and re image the machine, it will now work!

Usb ports in front on the PC are not working in windows 7

Hello try the vista driver from here:

http://www.dell.com/support/drivers/us/en/19/Product/precision-490-dt

You are probably needing the chipset driver, so the usb function will work again.

You can also visit intel here:

http://downloadcenter.intel.com/

And run the driver update utility, by installing a bit of software.

Make also sure there are no missing drivers in the device manager.

Hope this will help you

I have an FX5800 Nvidia CAD card with 4 GB ram, for high end graphics rendering. It is installed in a Dell Precision 490 with dual Xeons and 64gb of ram > I fire up the computer and it runs ok but...

It sounds like the card is bad. If it came with the computer, I suggest getting in contact with Dell.

The two beeps are a post error, most linked with a bad Video card. If it is still within the warranty period, it's best to get the part changed.

Can i convert a 32 bit to a 64 bit

You can use the Upgrade option during Windows 7 installation, which preserves your files, settings, and programs, only if you're currently running a 32-bit version of Windows Vista and you want to upgrade to the 32-bit version of Windows 7. Similarly, if you are running a 64-bit version of Windows Vista, you can only perform an upgrade to a 64-bit version of Windows 7. For more information, go to Upgrading to Windows 7: frequently asked questions on the Windows website.
If you want to move from a 32-bit version of Windows to a 64-bit version of Windows 7 or vice versa, you'll need to back up your files and choose the Custom option during Windows 7 installation. Then, you'll need to restore your files and reinstall your programs. For more information about performing a custom installation, see Installing and reinstalling Windows 7‍.
gl_ico.png Notes
  • To install a 64-bit version of Windows 7 on a computer running a 32-bit version of Windows, you'll need to start, or boot, your computer using a 64-bit Windows 7 installation disc or files.
  • If you start your computer using a 64-bit Windows 7 installation disc or files, but your computer isn't capable of running a 64-bit version of Windows, you'll see a Windows Boot Manager error. You'll need to use a 32-bit Windows 7 installation disc or files instead.
  • Windows Easy Transfer can't transfer files from a 64-bit version of Windows to a 32-bit version of Windows. If you're running a 64-bit version of Windows Vista but you plan to install a 32-bit version of Windows 7, you can move your files to an external location manually or use Backup and Restore in Windows Vista. For more information, go to Back up your files and

if your hard drives were in a RAID configuration at any point or your computer has a RAID controller in it nothing will work until you reconfigure the RAID setup. it is probably a good idea at this point to completely wipe the drives as there may be some lingering RAID configuration data remnants on them and this can also mess things up pretty good.

I have a dell gx240 im trying o make it boot and it just wont.i have used maxblast5 and 4 ive tried xp os and it wont install the hardrvives are used from an old computer, wht can i do to stsrtthe install

If your using the Dell recovery disk that came with the computer, chance are it wont install unless your using an identical hard drive as the original that was installed in it. You may need a new full OS disk. If you still have the original drive, may be able to ghost or clone the old drive and get it to work. There are quite a few programs for copying (ghosting, cloning) a complete hard drive image onto a new drive.

Can I use a SL8MA 2.8 dual core 4mb / 800 fsb processor in a dell precision 670?

I know this is late but it is the CORRECT answer.

Dell used different motherboards in the Precision 670 and they are listed as follows:
X0392XC837MG022U7565
I am running the XC837 motherboard and it WILL support the SL8MA processors. I have been told that the XC837 is the ONLY motherboard what will support the Dual Core Paxville Processors. If you are trying to use them in a 470 you will need XC838 Motherboard.

WD 500 GB resized by Norton Ghost Restore to 120 GB and can not get it to original size.

You should partition your new drive first to say 160Gb (you lose a bit after formatting) for 1st partition and the remaining capacity for the 2nd partition. Because your Ghost image is 120Gb it can only restore to a partition of 120Gb, that is why it shows 120Gb on a 500Gb on a single partition.
You may be able to fix this problem without starting again by using Disk Manager (from Control Panel - Admoinistrative Tools) to create a 2nd partition on the hard drive and format this partition.
