Re: plain paper is coming out with black lines on it
If the lines on the copies happen only when you use the doc feeder then you have something on the small slot glass if you put the document on the glass and make a copy if there is still a line it is probably the drum

Remove all cartridges, make sure any tape has been removed from over the nozzle. Ensure that everything has been installed properly, then use your printer (prompts on device, or in printer>control panel) to print some test pages, realign heads, etc.
Do you have dadf installed? If Yes run a copie from it and second from platen glass. If you have lines on dadf copy but not on copie from glass, you should very good clean the left narrow glass (dadf glass). But if you have lines on both copies you should check/ replace drum unit, but be sure thath fixing film unit is ok.
On a XC 1040 machine either there is a jam on the fuser, the fuser switch fell out of place, or the sensor swich arm fell off the registration sensor.
Since we cannot see the machine we might understand what is taking place.
If the machine is turned off and back on and there is no red light, then the machine must be able to attempt to make a copy. If a copy does not come out, then there is problely some worn feed rolls.
If when the machine is turned on and there is a red light then th There can be some bad paper feed cluthes as well. There might be a paper stuck at either fuser assemly or paper feed roller areas.
Provide more description about the visuals on the machine.
You're correct, it's the scanner. Finding out what exactly is wrong with it is a little more difficult. First check the easy thing, scan a sample paper 4 times, each time pushing it against a different one of the four corners, and see if the line goes away or changes when you change the location of the paper on the scanner. If that doesn't work, take off the glass plate and clean it and everything under it, then try again. If none of that helps, download the latest drivers.
