Question about Mitsubishi VS-5043 50" Rear Projection Television

4 Answers

Convergence Problem? I think my 10 year old TV is dying on me. There are streaky, curving lines at the top and bottom of the screen and the colors are separated. Text on the screen shows up double in both red and green versions, one below the other. I tried using the convergence utility with no luck. The verticle line matches up pretty well producing the desired "white line," but the horizontal red and blue lines refuse to merge into the "white" line. This happened all at once. The first two days, the TV picture spontaneously cleared up after being on for a half-hour or so. Is this worth fixing, or should I hit the big box stores to look for a replacement?

Thanks again. You've been a big help. We went with the Mitsubishi.

Thanks again for the input! Yes, the Mitsubishi is a DLP. We are leaning toward the Mitsubishi since we think the colors are more natural and we can get the 65" DLP Mits HD 1080P model(with the new 6 color light engine) for the same $$ as the Sony- $2499. Which Samsung do you like?

Thanks for responding; I was afraid that would be the advice! We're looking at the Sony KDS-60A200 or the Mitsubishi WD-65732 to replace it. If anyone has any thoughts on those two models, please post a reply.

Convergence problems are what you have possibly a pincushion error. Either way if you have to have a repair shop do the repair, you should look at replacing the old TV.

The Sony SXRD model you have listed have great pictures but, I have seen many blue panels fail so far. I am not sure about the Mitsubishi model you listed. Is it a DLP projection? DLP's are actually my favorite because if you have any kind of video games and or plan pn connecting a computer to the set at all, DLP's are totally immune from any kind of burn issue (image retention) at all. Other technologies are not. I would suggest watch the videos on www.dlp.com as they explain the technology behind. Samsung as well makes a great DLP projection at maybe 1/2 the cost of a Mitsubishi.

I am personnaly a fan of any of the Samsung DLP's. For one thier quality of build and also in my case the ease of repair. Us technicians like that part. Of course there is nothing wrong with Mitsubishi as they were the king of projection TV's for many years in my opinion. The only thing about 1080p is there will be no broadcast nor cable or sat. companies will to use such a large bandwidth required for 1080p. The only part where 1080p becomes useful is Blueray or HD DVD players. Those are expensive at the current time. A Playstation 3 playes Bluray discs.

You will need to replace your two convergence I.C.s.They are two large IC mounted on a large aluminum heat sink.Replace both, look for any burned resistors near them, replace those if needed, and readjust your convergence. Good Luck

SONY PROJECTION TV MODEL # KP-51WS510.

If the entire screen is curved, and it is not taking the whole screen, then you have a vertical deflection problem.

If the colors are double and do not match, with lines of different colors around pictures , then you have a convergence problem, often caused by a faulty convergence board.

The curving effect can be a side effect of bad convergence, or you may have both problems at once.

Unless you are a TV repairer yourself, better calling technical support. Usually you can ring the number listed on the owner manual.

Hitachi 46F500 and there is a blue curved bar

Your TV most likely has a Convergence Chip Failure ( common problem )

Here are some of the most common symptoms and example photos of a convergence problem

  • Screen looks 3D
  • Colors don't line up
  • One or more colors can't be adjusted when using the convergence menu.
  • Screen is bowed or warped.

You need to replace the convergence chips and convergence resistors. Check the site www.TvRepairKits.com. They have put together convergence repair kits for most models.

The kits include a photo instruction guide, original OEM Sanyo STK chips, convergence resistors, pico fuses, thermal paste, etc. Everything you will need to do the repair yourself.
