An engine light may come on if one or more of your cars sensors finds a problem. Not all problems are big and not all problems effect the driving performance of your car. Bu even though it hasn't effected your driving in most cases it eventually will. For instance, i have a car with a turbo, my engine light came on because for a brief second my turbo produced more "pressure" than normal. Since it wasn't effecting the way the car performed i left it. A year later my turbo broke because those brief seconds of increased pressure happened once a day for a year and eventually damaged the turbine. So even though your car runs fine, you may want to bring it to a service station just to get the code read. unfortunately a code reading can cost anywhere from $25-$100 depending on where you go, but it could save you a lot more money in the long run.
