Connecting an External Monitor or Data Projector
You can switch to anexternal monitor by two methods.1. Connect the externalmonitor to the laptop's video port, power up the external monitor first and thelaptop. The video information will automatically switch to the externalmonitor.2. If you power up thelaptop first then you can switch the video output to the external monitor bypressing the Fn key and one of the Function keys, depending upon your make andmodel laptop. You can also toggle between the external monitor or both LCDscreen plus the external monitor or back to LCD screen only by pressing the Fnkey plus one of the function key. I have the Dell 1525. The screen is black with only the cursor appearing. Please advise

Check to see if you have the machine switched out to a stand alone monitor. This is a feature on many lap tops that lets you re-direct the signal out to a larger monitor, or if your monitor fails you can display the computer info on another screen. This feature is engaged by holding down the Fn key and tapping teither the F4, or F6 key on many lap tops. This feature can be toggled by both displaying at the same time or switched to the stand alone or the Lap top.

The other cause is that the machine has malfunctioned usually because of the CPU failure and there is nothing to boot the machine up.

The Fn botton on my vio lap top won't work

The Fn button is like a 'shift' key. Just as you would press <Shift> and a letter to get a capitalized letter, you press <Fn> and a function key at the same time ( <Fn><F1> or <Fn><F2> and so on) to use the secondary function for that key. For example, on one of my laptops, the <F2> key has an icon for 'wireless' (looks like an antenna). If I simply press <F2>, I will activate the function for <F2>, but if I press <Fn> and <F2> at the same time, I will turn on my wiress adapter.

<Fn> all by itself does nothing.

Hope this helps.

Dropped lap top now wont boot up

press the fn key on laptop hold it down and then press the power key on the laptop. once u see any display on the screen you will get some tests running on the screen. The system will show you the error message which u need to note down. else you can do a Flea Power on your laptop. Remove the adapter and the battery and then press the power button and hold it down for 30 seconds then connect the battery and adapter back and try to turn on the laptop. See if the magic works for you
