Neither. Vista Basic OS.It is the PW asked for when you want to reformatt the computer to original factory condition.

Tried to load Win XP on computer but hardrive was not recognized by XP. Same problem when different HD was installed and tried to load XP again.

The password I need is the "Empowering Technology password"

needed to access" restore system to factory defaults".I don't have original PW generated during setup initial setup. You get to restore page by hitting "ALT"+ F10 while booting up. I DO have the windows Vistas PW but it won't work to access restore system. BIOS is not PW protected.

Also, when I try to load Win XP onto computer the hardrive is not recognized.I even tried a brand new harddrive.

I hope this clears things up a little. Thanks

Ok.. Seems like its the HDD password set using the BIOS. You can remove this pasword by taking out the CMOS battery for about a minute. This would reset all of your BIOS settings to default there by clearing the password. For more information click here

F10+alt don't work to reset acer aspire one to factory setting. what else can i do

Hi twillis84.
You will need to start your computer in the "Safe Mode", you do this by tapping F8 while the computer is starting up.
Once the computer has started, select "Safe Mode" you have two choices.
I would try "A" first.
A...You can do a System Restore from here.
You will click "Start">All Programs>Accessories>System Tools>System Restore, this will restore your system to an earlier time when it was operating properly.
B...Once you are in the safe mode, then you will double left click on "Start">Control Panel>User Accounts>Change an Account.
Now you can change your password, delete the account, etc.

Im trying to reset my whole computer back to factory settings and dont have the cd. and i do have the empowering technology thing but dont have the password to that the hint is balloon and i dont even know...

The default empowering password is 000000. That would be five or six zeros, I am fairly certain it is 6. You will need to boot from the original C drive for the factory restore to work. Once you enter the password in the empowering technology, you should find the option for a full factory restore.

Hope this helps

"Restoring a system should be a last ditch effort in trying to repair a computer, since restoration causes all programs and many files to be lost forever. Restoring an Acer computer to its original factory settings can be done in a few easy steps."
  1. Click “Start” menu.
  2. Click “Programs.”
  3. Click “Acer Recovery Management.”
  4. Click the “Restore” button on the bottom of the dialog box that opens.
  5. Click “Restore System to Factory Default.”
  6. Click “Yes” in the warning dialog box which asks if you wish to continue the recovery process.
  7. Click “Start” to restore the computer to the default factory settings.
