WD Passport Elite 320 - won't install autobackup launcher

By martinshaw on Dec 01, 2008

" "
I just bought the 320 GB Western Digital My Passport Elite and tried to install on my new HP laptop which runs Windows Vista-64. When trying to install the autobackup launcher, I am getting an error message "MemeoBackup Launcher has stopped working." Is this an incompatability issue? I've tried troubleshooting for the past two hours. The troubleshooting steps on their website are too techincal for me, and I don't want to screw up my laptop with all of my work files on it. I'm lost. Can anyone explain this problem and solution in simple terms? SO FRUSTRATING!

- Thanks. That was quick and very helpful!

Sheesh! Why didn't WD specify this on the box? Grrr... Guess I'll head back to Best Buy to return this thing and get my $ back. If you don't mind, I have some follow-up questions.

1) Is there another recommended brand that makes a portable hard drive that WILL work with Vista 64?

2) Tell me more about the Vista backup option.

3) Should I just go back to my old way of backing up files and burn a CD of my important documents?

- Thanks, Nick. I appreciate your helpful follow-up.

This has all been such as hassle that I'm starting to become paranoid about doing anything that might damage my data in any way, especially when what I'm trying to do is to find a way to protect it. Oh, the irony (and frustration) of the situation!

I've always backed up my data to CD, and I think I'll just use that method. If I need any help, you are the guy I'm going to from now on! It's nice to have a technology consultant around. :-)

Thanks a bunch,
Cindy

The problems is this: at this point, Western Digital is not supporting Vista 64-bit with any of their related software. Granted, some things will still work while using the 32-bit version, but some won't, and the backup software is a prime example of the latter.

You might try downloading the latest version of the software from here:

Chances are, it will still barf, but it can't hurt to try it out. An alternative is to use another backup application; the one included with Vista ought to work. I wish I had better news, and believe me, as a user of both XP 64 and Vista 64, I feel your pain.

Cheers

Nick

- I don't know of any portable drives that are specifically Vista 64 compatible. I currently have a 500gb Maxtor (a brick-sized thing that isn't particularly portable) USB drive, and it works fine with Vista 64, and I've run it on an XP 64 system as well. That said, I've never tried to use the bundled backup software with it, either.

As for Windows Backup feature, it can be accessed via START > ACCESSORIES > SYSTEM TOOLS menu. Just click on it, and it does a pretty good job of walking you through it, and will allow you to backup to CD or DVD, or even another hard drive (like your WD, provided it functions okay as a hard drive). I could explain it, but MS actually does it well enough. If you get stuck or have questions, just let me know.

Cheers
