Let me make sure I understand what you mean by "maxpc". Are you talking about the product that promises to "unleash the power of your pc" via registry scrubbing, etc.? Everything I type from this point on will be assuming as much.

First of all, do you have any other evidence that your pc is infected? While it is true that some viruses disable the use of programs they percieve as anti-virus software in order to keep the computer infected, I am not entirely sure the MaxPC software would be affected by a virus this way.

Run an anti virus software such as the free home version of AVAST! available at www.avast.com and see what if you are infected.

If you ARE infected, please refer to the directions I post at the bottom of this post.

if you are not infected with any malicious software or virus, congrats. You might just have some slight registry changes that wont allow the application to open or work properly. In this case, you should do a clean install. Simply uninstall and reinstall the software.

If you are still having problems, IS3 offers fantastic live support for their software (like MaxPC) available here.

--------------VIRUS/MALWARE REMOVAL HELP INSTRUCTIONS-------

Preparing for the Malware Removal Process

1. As a general rule, your personal data should be backed up regularly for any unexpected eventuality. If you do not already have a process in place that backs up your data, it is highly recommended you do this now, before proceeding with the malware removal process. Click here for guidelines on what to back up and how to do it.

2. If you have cracked (illegal) software installed, click here.

3. Uninstall the following via Add or Remove Programs in Control Panel:
• If you have more than one antivirus software installed, leave only ONE and uninstall the others.

• p2p programs like uTorrent, Bittorrent, LimeWire, Morpheus, etc., as they are a major conduit for malware and a likely source of your current issues. See this link
========================================================

Downloads and Reports Required:

Download DDS and save it to your desktop.

Download GMER Rootkit Scanner from here or here. Unzip it to your Desktop.

========================================================
Before scanning, make sure all other running programs are closed and no other actions like a scheduled antivirus scan will occur while the scan is being performed. Do not use your computer for anything else during the scan.
========================================================

1. Double-click gmer.exe. The program will begin to run.

**Caution**
These types of scans can produce false positives. Do NOT take any action on any "<--- ROOKIT" entries unless advised by a trained Security Analyst

If possible rootkit activity is found, you will be asked if you would like to perform a full scan.
• Click Yes.
• Once the scan is complete, you may receive another notice about rootkit activity.
• Click OK.
• GMER will produce a log. Click on the [Save..] button, and in the File name area, type in "Gmer.txt" or it will save as a .log file which cannot be uploaded to your post.
• Save it where you can easily find it, such as your desktop.
If you do not receive notice about possible rootkit activity remain on the Rootkit/Malware tab & make sure the 'Show All' button is unticked.
• Click the Scan button and let the program do its work. GMER will produce a log. Click on the [Save..] button, and in the File name area, type in "Gmer.txt" or it will save as a .log file which cannot be uploaded to your post.
• Save it where you can easily find it, such as your desktop.

2. Disable any script blocker, and then double click dds.scr to run the tool.
• When done, DDS.txt will open.
• Click Yes at the next prompt for Optional Scan.
• Save both reports to your desktop.

Steps to help remove a virus:

    1.

Visit Microsoft Update and install the latest updates.

    2.

If you currently use antivirus software, visit the manufacturer's Web site, update your software, and then perform a thorough scan of your computer. If you don't use antivirus software, subscribe to a service and scan your computer immediately.

    3.

Download, install, and run the Malicious Software Removal Tool (for Microsoft Windows XP or Windows 2000 users). Note that this tool does not prevent viruses from infecting your system; it helps to remove existing viruses.

I recommend running a few programs to make sure that you don't have a virus, spyware or adware hiding in your system. Avast is a free anti-virus tool that is very effective. Super-anti-spyware is great for getting rid of spyware, and Adaware is a great anti-adware tool --- both of these are also free. Try downloading these programs (all 3) and run them on your computer -- this will likely get your system running like normal. Once you have run these, run a disk cleanup and defragmenter to get everything into tip-top shape.

I have a virus and it wont download java or many things i try to download and it is very slow.

First thing you need to do is get rid of that virus/spyware or whatever it is. If you don't have a virus program there are several out there that allow you to download a trial version temporarily. I personally prefer www.kapersky.com, but there are others. Spybot is also very helpful in getting rid of spyware and that is at www.spybot.com. If you can't get rid of the virus/spyware/malware then the best thing to do is to do a system recovery. If you computer does not have a system recovery partition then as a last resort you will have to reinstall windows from your disk. Make sure you tell it to format your drive. You will need to re-install your programs and load your document files from your backups. You do have a current backup of your data, right? Good luck.

It may not be a virus. It sounds more like a bad case of spyware. You may want to download, install, update, and run something like Malwarebytes AntiMalware. It sounds pretty serious, so it may need the attention of a PC technician to fully remove the infection.

Hope this helps!

Computer has viruses which might be why it has a the blue screen

Try entering safe mode and doing the virus scan:
  • Switch on your PC
  • Before the Windows Logo screen appears press F8 to get the startup options menu
  • Chose Safe Mode
  • Once your computer boots, run AVG and let it remove all the viruses. Reboot and it should go into Windows as normal. You might have to rerun the scan a few times to get rid of everything but it should do the job.

Fake site turning up

try changing your homepage to what you want it to be. if it keeps reverting back to that or won't let you change it at all - i seem to remember an adware infection called search save or cool savings (something to that effect). If that's the case you will need some sort of virus/adware removal tool to get rid of it or you can reinstall windows.

hope this helps

Virus on my computer help!

Hi,

Don't worry, trojan.adclicker is not a serious threat, only some spyware which is not anywhere near as malicious as a virus. There are two things you can do to get rid of it though..

1) Follow these instructions (They are long winded but will work)
http://www.symantec.com/security_response/writeup.jsp?docid=2002-091214-5754-99&tabid=3

2) Download Spybot S&D. This is a really good bit of software that should get rid of it much more easily for you, and will probably get rid of other similar stuff on your pc. Follow the link below and then install the program, then scan the system, then fix problems.

http://www.safer-networking.org/en/mirrors/index.html

I would recommend trying option 2 first, it will be less hassle.

Hope this was helpful
