Moving data from PC hard drive to MAC

It seems that the power supply on my Dell Dimension C521 desktop PC has died. I am considering buying a MAC. Is there a way to move the data from my Dell hard drive to the MAC?

SOURCE: Dell Dimension C521 power shuts off spontaneously

Hello,

If the fan on your power supply is not turning then you need to replace the power supply as soon as possible. The machine is overheating and then shutting off. If the power supply is not replaced it can cause additional problems with the motherboard, cpu, and hard drive. Open your case and look on the power supply for your replacement parts number, check Ebay.com for a replacement. They are easy to replace, just a few screws and power plugs.

I hope this helps, if so please rate my solution.

SOURCE: I have a PC Dell Dimension 2400 with a hard 40 GB

Basically when you install a new boot drive you need to install Windows operating system on the new hard drive, also the device drivers (eg video, audio, modem, LAN etc), your programs and data. The reason programs has to be installed is because the installation process copied DLL files to the System folders and makes changes to the registry.
You can only copy your data onto the new hard disk.
To avoid copying your data to the new hard drive, you can set up the old hard drive as second hard drive (ie. slave drive), if you delete the redundant folders and leave only the data folders then you have an adddition 40Gb of disk space.

Can you get a bigger psu for dell dimension c521 that will fit inside the case

Hello aprilmick

I think you can.
the case dimension for your dell PC is H: 15.8" (40.13 cm) W: 4.5" (11.43 cm) ---> the standard power supplies have a width of less than 10cm.
D: 14.2" (36.07 cm) ---> the standard power supplies have a debth of almost 15cm.

Considering these measurments you can use a standard power supply of whatever rating you want. It may be a little too tight between the power supply and the CD/DVD drive, but it is possible.

Good luck

My c521 powers up but will not boot. What can I try to fix the problem? Thanks

Check for internal missing devices and connectivities. check for disk media in the disk drives. The system unit has no hard storage drive.

Hi - our dell dimension c521 is stuck in power save mode. The light on the monitor is solid orange and will not respond to the keyboard or mouse

A solid amber light indicates a pre-POST failure has occurred. The system has received a Power Good signal from the power supply so it's not a power supply issue. HERE is the documentation that tells what the lights mean and possible solutions.

It will not start even after I replaced the power

Before anything else, open your case and make sure all power and data cables going to motherboard, disk drives, etc are firmly seated, and remove and re-install memory sticks in the same locations. Sometimes temperature changes inside the PC can cause these connections to loosen. If that doesn't fix it, do you hear the noise of the cooling fans coming on? If you do, check your monitor for a green light. If you get a green light on the monitor and fans are powered up and running and you get nothing else it could be a hard drive issue. Try booting from CD in that case. If fans come on briefly and then shut off, or fans stay on and you have no green monitor light, this could indicate an issue with your processor or motherboard.

How do I restore my Dell Dimension C521? I am

You need the C521 recovery disk, from Dell. Set the BIOS to boot from CD and start the system.

If it gives you the option of "Complete Reinstall" or "Repair", choose Complete Reinstall.

If it does not, or if it does not work - i.e., it always reads the disk and tries to maintain as much data as it can, you need to first wipe out the hard drive; there are many "Disk Wipe" utilities out there. I'd suggest using a boot disk such as DBAN (www.dban.org).

I have at current a AMD sempron 3400+1.80GHz processor,socket AM2(940)core VID 1.100V,core speed 1002.2 MHz,bus speed 200.4MHz,HT link 801.7 MHz,stepping 2,L1 data and inst 64 KBytes-2-way,level 2 256...

The main thing is before you go swapping cpu there are some things to consider. 1. the new processor may draw more power than your current power supply can push out. 2. it will probably generate a lot more heat...both are bad..

But if you insist you can get away with an Athlon 64 X2 5600 or 6000+ cpu be careful though because some have different voltages which may not work with your board.

hope that helps.
