Trying to get computer to recognize camcorder

I have tried to hook up my JVC camcorder model GR-DVL915U using a firewire cable. I don't have the camcorder software and was wondering if it was needed to recognize my camcorder. I have Roxio software and Windows Movie Maker if I can ever get started. Where can I download the software for free? JVC website said it will cost around 80.00. Please help! I have spent several days on this trying to get it to work.

I was successful downloading and unzipping file to computer, but windows will not open it. It gives me a list of choices to open the files and I have tried several. It is not working. What do I do now?

Ok, I got to the point where you said look under IEEE 1394 bus host controllers and when I right clicked my two only choices were "scan for hardware properties" and "properties". I tried to go further and nothing happened. Please help!

I would try the link below if you haven't already. On that page there is a lot of info (terrible support website). About half way down the page there is the link listed below (I copied the title but it listed it as a link.) software and manuals.... Try downloading that file and unzipping it following the directions on the page. I believe that is the driver for the camera. The type of file it downloads is a driver file type. It should work with other software then. I also noticed on the very bottom of the page there is a link for capture and editing software. I went to downloaded it but it wanted a serial number from a camera. I think if you read and look closely you should find what you are looking for on that page. I hope this helps.

With the camera plugged into the PC right click on My computer. Select manage then select device manager. scroll down until you find the camera there should be a yellow ? by it. It should be under the IEEE 1394 bus host controllers if not look under the Universal serial bus controllers. Right click on it and select update driver. It will ask you if you want to connect to the internet, select no not this time. On the next screen select install from list it is the advanced option. Then browse to the folder where the unzipped file is located. If it is your desktop it should be c:\Document and Settings\Username you logged in as\desktop. Then select next. The wizard should load the driver if it is the right one. If this does not work the driver is not the right one. I don't have that camera so I can't test it for you. I hope this works for you. If it doesn't let me know I will try to look some other places for the driver.

The USB on your camcorder is for downloading still pictures only. If you want to transfer video to your computer you need to hook up a firewire cable, which is to the right of the USB connection. Firewire is also known as 1394 connection.

Hope it helps.

I need a usb cable for my jvc gr-d22u video camera

In my opinion, Firewire is the best method for transferring video to your computer from your camcorder. The JVC GR-D22 and Dell Inspiron 9200 both have firewire ports if I am not mistaken.

Record directly from jvc model GR-- D370U Digital Video Camera to my pc

Sorry, but it's not possible to record directly to a PC. Windows movie maker will only record from a tape. Please use a quality cable like Belkin, I have had issues with the cheaper firewire cords.
Good luck

My computer no longer recognizes my JVC GR-D70U mini DV cam when I plug it into a usb port.

Hi, I am not sure. But I believe the camcorder has to be on when you connect to the computer. and I assume you use firewire for this particular camcorder.
I too once had this problem when I used Windows Vista. If you too use Vista, try it with Windows XP.

cheers,
