1 Answer

I am trying to set up security for my lynksis.  Currently it is unsecured. I was following directions then lost interent connection.  When I tried to use the ISP of 192.168.1.100 nothing happens.  I just now saw that I should connect to an ethernet...but I don't think I have anything as this has been set up for a while...any way to get around this?

Hi!
To access the router's web interface for configuration, you need a PC that's physically connected to the router (ethernet connection). Follow these steps:

Step 1 Open your Internet browser and type the IP address of the router in the address bar (http://192.168.1.1) . The default IP address is 192.168.1.1 . At the login, leave the username blank and type your password (default password is admin). Click the OK button.

Step 2 To setup security, Click the Wireless tab > then select Wireless Security (right below the Wireless tab).

Step 3 Under Wireless Security, you can either select WEP or WPA for wireless security.

When selecting WEP 64 bits: (for windows XP SP1 to Vista)

Look for Key 1 box - type a 10 hexadecimal password (meaning letters A to F or numbers 0 to 9 only). Example: ABC1234567 or 985D8A8F04 .

When selecting WEP 128 bits (for XP SP2 to Vista)

Look for Key 1 box - type a 26 character Hexadecimal code.

When selecting WPA PErsonal: (XP SP2 to Vista)

Look for a passphrase box - type a password at least 8 characters (numbers or letters).

Please DO NOT FORGET the password that you set - you will need this for wireless connection.

Click Save settings.

I hope that helps!

Good luck and have a nice day!

I currently have the product below, but is connected to a unsecured network. How do I get it to where the network I am connected to is secured. thanks for your help.

Start your web browser and in the address bar type 192.168.1.1 a window will appear and ask for a username and password. leave the username blank and type ADMIN in the password. This should gain you access to the router settings. Just look at the top tool bar for "WIRELESS". Then click on wireless security. Once there you can change the name of your network ffrom LYNKSYS to a name of your choosing. Also you can set a passcode. For basic security use the WPA personal and TKIP password. You need to choose a "passphrase" and you will have to enter it to connect to the nertwork. make sure to SAVE CHANGES. You can also change the password to gain access to the router (the 192.168.192 part). IF YOU DO make sure you can remember it.

Once all the settings are in place, any device trying to connect to your network will be required to enter the pass phrase EXACTLEY as you entered it in the router settings. You should only have to do it the first time.

I currently have an unsecured internet connection. How do I make it a secure connection?

You want to secure the wireless network.
Is there any computer connected to the router with the Ethernet cable?
If not then you will need to connect the computer to the router with the cable.
Check the IP address on the computer. Open the router set up page.
Once you open the set up page, you will find the option to make it secured

Have lynksys wireless router but is unsecure -

You can enable WEP on your router to make your wireless network secure.

To access the screen of the router, type the ip address of the router in the address bar of Internet explorer or Firefox. By default the ip address of the router is 192.168.1.1. If this doesn't work, go to the command prompt (Start -> run -> type cmd). Type ipconfig. Copy the default gateway.

It will prompt you for a user name and password. By default leave the user name blank and then type admin in the password field.

Once you are in the Linksys screen, go to the Wireless tab -> Wireless security.

For the security mode, select WEP.

WEP encryption: 64bits 10 hex digits.

On the Passphrase field, type a wireless password of your choice, then click Generate.

It will give you a key. You will need to copy the wireless network key because you will need to enter this key on your PS3 and laptop. Take note that this is also case sensitive.

Once you click save settings, it will disconnect all your wireless computers.

You will need to manually enter the wireless network key on all your wireless devices. Without the network key, other computers will not be able to connect to your network.

I hope this helps.

Please take a moment to leave a comment if you find this solution helpful. Your feedback is important and very much appreciated.

Laptop stopped connecting via wifi to home network.

The wireless settings in the Belkin has been setup with encryption.
You can restore the Belkin back to the factory default by powering up the Belkin and press the RESET button for 7 secs.
It is not wise to leave your wireless router unsecured, anyone can access your network and Internet connection and use up your allocated download limit. Once you exceed your download limit you could be slug with addition charges - this depends upon your contract with your ISP.
