Question about Philips Magnavox 51MP392H Rear Projection Television

1 Answer

My 4 year old Magnavox 51" rear proj TV cycles ON/OFF every 5 sec

Help! My 51MP392H/17 suddenly will not work. When powered on, it goes into a constant cycle of powering on for 5 seconds then turning off and coming right back on. The only way to break the cycle is to unplug it. I can't get to any menu or see a picture. A little background. I replaced the amplifier modules about 6 months ago with no problem. I was getting a blue glow and decided to try replacing the coolant. Took out the Blue CRT and then decided that the coolant was ok. Put the Blue CRT back in and the TV powered up fine. Decided to see if the Service mode convergence menu might help. Got into that, it looked complicated and didn't make any changes. Powered off the TV (to get out of SGM mode) and it started doing power on/off infinite cycle. Any clue as to what might be going on??? Any help will be most appreciated.

Hello bcd74071,

I would suspect that the shutdown circuit is triggering. Have you checked the HV anodes of the CRTs to see if the voltage is fluctuating? In addition I would check the Horizontal output transistor and the Power FET in the switching power supply. The fact that you removed the blue CRT and put it back and the problem seemed to go away points to a possible cold solder joint which could have this effect also. There are a number of things that could be wrong, Here is a list of some of them that you can check:

1) Faulty component on power supply board (check capacitors for problems)
2) Faulty connection on power supply board (check for cold solder joints)
3) Faulty component on Deflection of HV power supply board (check for bad capacitors, zener diodes, Horizontal Output Transistor, and Integrated High Voltage Ttransformer)
4) Faulty connection on HV power supply board (check for cold solder joints)
5) Faulty CRTs (check anode voltages, remove anodes from CRTs and see if the set remains on, if so check for shorts on the CRT socket board or using a CRT analyzer check for internal CRT shorts)

These items are but a starting place for you.

I hope this helps,

Thank you,

Shuttle83

More than likely the SSB board. Part# 313912725871 cost around $200.00 or more. Plugs into the signal board on it's edge like memory in a computer. The only thing is these sets are junk, and this is just the beginning of your problems. Don't waste your money on fixing this set. They don't hold up to repair. Trust me on this, been fixing sets for over 20 years.....my full time job. Buy a Pioneer,Panasonic,Hitachi,Sony or a high end Sharp WITH an extended warranty. Nothing lasts anymore, but with the above sets, you have a chance of it lasting a few years and getting service if needed. Otherwise the other sets are disposable....no parts available. NEVER buy China made anything!!!! You might get 6 months, then it's ready for the junk pile. No service,No parts, No nothing.

Actually I have this TV and you need 2 Convergence IC's STK392-120's (120's and 150's will work) of course order 2 of the same type I'm using replacement 150's they allow for a little higher heat and were cheaper ALSO you need to replace the 12 resistors with 6.8 ohm metal film resistors, make sure they are metal film! don’t skimp out here I did and then they blew and fried my IC's and I had to replace everything again!

Great reference link that I posted pictures on, check out page 3
http://www.techlore.com/forum/thread/16736/Magnavox-51MP392H-17-51-quot--TV-has-double-vision/

Where I got all my parts that worked:
Suburban Electronics http://www.suburban-elect.com/

Manual Library you should find all you need here:
http://www.techlore.com/group/2/list_downloads

What you need:
(2) STK392-120 OR STK392-150 IC chips
(12) 6.8 Ohm Metal Film resistors
set of star screw drivers
15 watt pencil solder pencil, DO NOT use a high watt iron you will fry the surface mounted item.
good leaded solder, and flux

BTW if you don’t plan on trying this and are going to throw out the TV, I still need a IC convergence board for a 51MP392H/17 TV I'm fixing, I'm willing to pay S/H and buy your IC board that’s not been tampered with. Edwinkraus@hotmail.com

sounds like Convergence issue.... I have some pictures of the bowing picture TV on the link below...

I'll post you my general message which is for a similar Philips Magnavox 51 inch TV, you'll need to check the manual verify the correct IC convergence chips and resistors, the manual link is below as well... usally the IC's are STK392-120's or 150's and the resistors are 6.8 ohm 12 of then...

anyway read the general post below it will get you headed in the right direction.

I have a Magnavox 51" Projector TV. Model 51MP392H/17

Hello bullmuscle,

This is a power supply problem, I would suspect the HV power supply because the primary and secondary supplies anymore are tied to the HV power supply. This type of repair requires certain pieces of equipment, to test voltages, look at signals, and to if need be test for shorts in inductors (Switching PS transformer and Flyback transformer). I would not recommend that you try to fix this yourself, The cost for this type of problem is not that expensive and can be done in one evening, if the parts are available. You may be fortunate and it could be just a blown fuse, in the HV or LV power supply circuit

I hope this helps,

Thank you,

Shuttle83

There is a mode these set run in that stretches the side so the screen is completely filled, this is so the people do not seem all fat and short, this mode is known as Panoramic, this is one of the screen settings you can choose, I believe your set has a 4X5 or normal mode, 16X9 and maby a 16X9 zoom, the panoramic and maybe one more, find the format button on the remote and cycle through them
