Sony handycam dcr-PC55 shuts itself down as soon as turned on

I switch on the handy cam and the led all light up and the tape whirls and then the LCD flashes for a split second and everything shuts down.

If I turn it on with the LCD folded away then it stays on and I can switch between modes, take pictures and everything seems fine, but as soon as I open the LCD screen it flashes and the whole cm corder shuts down.

I tried this with the power cord plugged in too in case it is a battery roblem but I get the exact same behavior.

Any Ideas?

SOURCE: Black and white playback with sony handycam dcr-hc20

There is no problem on your camera, DCR-HC19E is PAL system(European system) DCR-HC20 is NTSC(American system). Are you in US or Europe? I think your TV is NTSC, cause the tape recorded on DCR-HC19E you played has no color. To confirm, connect your HC20 to TV in camera mode, not recording yet, just look at the TV as your monitor, If its in color, no problem, just erase the old video recorded on the HC19E, but if its important to you, you can convert it to NTSC using a PC. thanks

SOURCE: HANDY CAM LCD SCREEN BLANK

Inside the door hinge area is a small switch that normally would turn off the viewfinder and turn on the LCD panel. THat switch could be defective or mechanically not being switched. WIthout opening up the unit, I can not tell specifically. This shouldbe a simple repair for any shop that repairs cameras.

How do you switch tape speeds to LP on a Sony Handy cam TRV 240

You can set tape speed SP or LP in record mode only and can not change it in playback mode.
To set tape speed, turn camcorder in camera mode and go to Menu and set SP or LP in record speed option.

Is the memory stick of sony handy cam minidv trv-18 expandable?

On many cameras , the picture format that you can save on memory stick is not the same that you can have by recording on tapes. It should be tha same on your handycam.

You can increase memory stick to at least 2GB, that is what sony reccomends, you can test a 4 gb to 16 gb at the shop, if it works , then buy it.

However, the quality of movies grabbed on memory stick, should be far less than the one of movies recorded on tape.

How can I prevent the Handy cam to shut down on stand-by as I use the cam for computer recording

Buy one of these:
http://www.signvideo.com/zoom-controller-lanc-dvx-menu.htm

If you plug it into the LANC input on your camcorder it will prevent the camera from going into standby mode (assuming you have a camcorder with a Control-L jack).
