Do I plug the IDE hard drive cable?

Do I plug the IDE hard drive cable into the blue or the white connector pin on the motherboard? Please and Thank-you!

If the hard drive is your system drive you want to connect it to the IDE1 connector. Color coding isn't standard, so you'll need to look at the board for labels screened on. Both connectors are the same, so if you get it wrong you won't damage anything. The computer will come on, but you may get error messages when the operating system doesn't start up. If that happens, just shut the power off and plug the cable into the other connector.

Not all motherboards have this color coded. Here are the general rules: The large connectors are divided into two groups. There is a smaller FDD (floppy disk driver connector) that has 34 pins. And there is at least one larger 40pin IDE/EIDE connector. If you have multiple IDE/EIDE connectors, which one you use is not important. What is very important is to ensure you align pin one of the connectors and you select the correct device order. Some cables are not keyed and allow connection either way- make sure the color coded wire is going to pin one of the connector (there may me an arrow-head indicator on the cable connector also). Device order is selected two ways: if the cable you are using has two device connectors on it (besides the connector to plug into the board), the middle is for slave, and the end connector is for master. If there is only one device connector, then it is master only. The device (let's say it is your 1TB Hard Disk ;-) will either have an auto-detect (nothing for you to do), or a jumper on it to select [slave, master, or auto]. There will be writing on the back to inform you of this, and the proper setting of the jumper. Ensure you have connected master/slave commonly on the cable and the device. Note also, it is advisable to have your boot disk as a master.

First, are you adding a new drive, or replacing an old one? There are usually two connectors for hard drives on the motherboard, a primary and secondary interface. Sometimes you can see the writing on the motherboard. Usually, either one will let your computer use the hard drive. If you've tried both connections and it still doesn't work, then there's a possibility that your drive jumpers need to be set. It's a small colored square that fits over two pins in the back of the drive. There are usually six pins but can be more. They are designated Master, Slave and Cable Select. You might see them as just MS, SL and CS or something like that. If you have only one drive, then it should be set to Master. If you have two drives, it needs to be the opposite of the other drive. (If the other drive is a master, your new one needs to be slave) This holds true for CD drives as well. Lastly, if one drive uses the Cable Select jumper, then use the Cable Select jumper on the other drive.

Find socket for hard drive


HP part number 5188-5473 brings up the Asus A8N-LA motherboard, made especially for HP,

I will elate some information based on the above, and see if it does you any good;

1) The Asus A8N-LA has connectors for two types of Harddrives;

A) IDE. Also known as PATA.

This type of Harddrive uses a flat ribbon IDE(PATA) data cable,

The connectors on each end have 40 socket holes. One socket hole will be blocked off. (Or should be) ONLY 39 socket holes are used.

A look at the connector on the motherboard;

Looking at the motherboard illustration, look at the Bottom/Right corner. There are two IDE connectors. They are marked as IDE 1, and IDE 2.

Scrolling down a little bit to the motherboard photo, you will see IDE 1 connector is Black in color, and IDE 2 is Blue in color.

The IDE (PATA) harddrive's data cable goes to IDE 1.
Optical drive/s (CD/DVD drive) goes to IDE 2.

This is the type of power cable from the Power Supply, that goes to an IDE (PATA) harddrive,

NOTE*
There is usually a square, or rectangle, or two bumps; used on the IDE ribbon cable connector, to line up with the connector on the motherboard, or harddrive, or optical drive.

It is called a Locating Lug.

This particular IDE data cable connector, has two raised bumps, for a Locating Lug.

It lines up with a Cutout in the motherboard's connector, or the harddrive's connector, or the optical drive's connector.

IF, there is NO Locating Lug, use the faint Red stripe on the side of the IDE data cable.
The red stripe is on the same side as Number 1 wire.

Number 1 wire goes to number 1 pin.
On a harddrive, or optical drive, number 1 pin is ALWAYS closest to the power cable connection,

Looking at the photo number 1 pin is on the Right side. It is closest to where the 4-pin Peripheral power cable plugs in.

B) SATA:

Looking at the motherboard photo, the Yellow, and Blue, and Black, and White connectors; to the left of the Blue IDE connector, and Black IDE connector; are SATA connectors.

SATA 1 is Black. This is where the SATA harddrive's data cable, is supposed to plug in.

The BEAUTY of SATA though, is that you can plug the harddrive into ANY of those SATA connectors on the motherboard, and BIOS will find the harddrive. (Or any other peripheral device)

The red SATA connector shown below the SATA cable example, is just a different style of SATA motherboard connector; than what your motherboard uses.

Note the L-shaped opening in the SATA data cable's connector.
Lines up with the L shape on the motherboard connector, or harddrive connector, or optical drive connector.

Most SATA data cable connectors, also have a Lock on them.
Sometimes it's a Lock you can easily see.

Most times, it is a small depression you depress with your thumbnail, or a little 'bulb' you depress.
Depress/unlock to plug the cable in, or remove the cable.

The 90 degree angle connector end, (As shown), plugs into the harddrive, or optical drive. The Straight connector end plugs into the motherboard.

Between it, and the SATA data cable connector, it is the larger of the two.
SATA power cable connector has 15-pins.
SATA data cable connector has 7-pins.

Also note the rectangular depression on the SATA power cable's connector. That is where you depress to unlock the connector.
The SATA power cable's connector also has an L-shaped opening.

2) IF, you are trying to hook up a laptop harddrive to this motherboard, you need to determine if the laptop harddrive is an IDE (PATA) type, or a SATA type.

How?
Easy.

There is a label on the laptop harddrive. It has the manufacturer code on it. Type the number/letters in your browser search bar, and click on the search icon. (Magnifying Glass)

Now purchase an external enclosure.

The external enclosure opens up, and the laptop harddrive goes inside, and plugs into an interface.

Close the external enclosure, and plug it's USB cable into any available, open USB port on your computer.

It will be a 2.5 external enclosure.
Harddrive's are measured across their width.

A desktop harddrive is 3.5 inches across in width.
A laptop harddive is 2.5.

This is a general example of a 24-pin ATX main power cable, and it's respective connector on the motherboard,

Note the Lock on the side of the main power cable's connector, and the matching Tab on the motherboard connector. When properly plugged in, the hooked end of the Lock will be over the Tab, on the motherboard connector.

In the photo of the motherboard shown on the Ebay link, this connector is on the Right side of the motherboard, next to the blue IDE (PATA) connector.

2) 4-pin ATX +12 Volt power cable; (F - Auxiliary 12V ATX Connector)

There is a Lock tab on the connector that you depress, to install, or remove the cable.

A SATA data cable is used for the SATA harddrive. The connector end that goes to the Harddrive, is usually a 90 degree bent elbow.

The Bottom one, or one closest to the outside edge of the motherboard, is SATA1.

Although it isn't marked on the motherboard, or at least not visible in this photo, SATA 4 is. Look at the top where a SATA 4 connector would be.
The SATA harddrive should be plugged into the SATA1 header.

HOWEVER, the beauty of SATA is that it does NOT matter, which SATA header on the motherboard, you plug the SATA harddrive into.

BIOS will find it.

(Supposed to be SATA harddrive to SATA1, and a SATA optical drive to SATA2)
In the motherboard photo on Ebay, they are Orange in color, and under the blue IDE (PATA) connector.

C) Going from Hardware Details and the Ebay motherboard photo;

B - CPU Fan 1 Connector, is where the Processor fan plugs in.
In the motherboard photo, there are 7 cylindrical Electrolytic Capacitors in a row, to the left of the processor socket.

This connector is located immediately above the top capacitor, near the outside edge of the motherboard. (Brown in color)

E - Floppy Disk Connector, is above the white 24-pin ATX main power cable's connector, and the blue IDE (PATA) connector. It is Yellowish in color. (34 pins)

G - System Fan Connector, is white in color, has 3 contact pins, and is located under the white, square 4-pin ATX +12 Volt power cable connector. This is where the computer case fan plugs in.

I - PCI Express x16 Connector, is Orange in color, and below the processor socket. It has PCI Express silkscreened on the motherboard immediately below it.
This where a graphics card, and ONLY a graphics card, is installed.

J - PCI Express x1 Connector, is white in color, and immediately below the orange PCI Express x16 connector.
This is NOT used for a graphics card.

Whatever you can use in a PCI slot, except a graphics card, can be used in this slot; -> Provided it is a PCI Express x1 card.
(Ethernet Card, Sound Card, etc)

L - CD-in Connector is where the audio cable from the Main (Primary) optical drive goes to.
Ya got me on this one. I know it's located real close to the Realtek audio chipset, and I think that is to the left of the orange PCI Express x16 slot.

M - Front Audio Connector, is where the front audio (Sound) ports, of the Front Panel connect to.
Green in color, and located under the bottom white long PCI slot, and near the outside edge of the motherboard.

N - Clear CMOS Jumper is self explanatory. It is located under the finned Heatsink, (Looks like a meat tenderizer), of the Southbridge chip.
(Which is located under the Ram Memory slots)

O - USB Connectors are Yellow in color, and located under the finned Heatsink of the Southbridge chip, and towards the outside edge of the motherboard. (Or also located under the Ram Memory slots)

P - Front Panel Connector, is located at the Bottom/Right corner of the motherboard, close to the 'Buzzer'. (Buzzer is used for BIOS Beep Codes) PANEL1

4 pins on the Left side, 5 pins on the Right side.
The pins on the Left side are numbered EVEN.
The pins on the Right side are numbered ODD.

Starting on the Bottom of the Left side going Up;
Pins 2, 4, 6, 8, and 10.

Starting on the Bottom of the Right side going Up;
Pins 1, 3, 5, and 7

A) Pins 1 and 3 are for the HarDDrive activity LED. (Light)
Pin 1 is for the Positive ( + ) wire.
If the HDD LED is dim when the harddrive is active, switch the wires around.

B) Pins 5 and 7 are for a Reset switch. IF a Reset switch is used.

C) Pin 9 is Not Connected. Used by the factory.

D) Pins 2 and 4 are for the Power On LED. (Light)
Pin 2 is for the Positive ( + ) wire.
If the PWR LED is dim when the computer is on, switch the wires around.

E) Pins 6 and 8 are for the Power On switch.

1) IDE {PATA} DVD burner drive:

For an IDE { PATA } DVD burner, connect to the 40-pin IDE header on the motherboard. This is located to the right side of the Ram Memory slots.
It is the longer header that has 40 contact pins. {39 actually}

( The shorter connector on the motherboard is for a Floppy Drive.
{34 pins} It is above the IDE 40-pin connector )

NOTE*
The IDE connector on the motherboard should be keyed. Should have a cutout on one side. This is so the Number 1 pin in the flat IDE ribbon cable, will line up with Number 1 pin in the motherboard connector.

Some flat IDE ribbon cables, do not have a Locating Lug on the connector. (Small rectangular 'bump')

Number 1 pin on the IDE ribbon cable will be on the side that has a faint RED stripe on it.

Number 1 pin in the motherboard connector is at the Bottom, with the motherboard installed.

The side of the flat ribbon IDE cable that has the faint red stripe on it, goes DOWN, when installed in the motherboard connector.

If the DVD drive does not have a cutout for it's circuit board, the faint red stripe of the flat ribbon IDE cable, goes towards the power cable connection.

2) SATA DVD burner drive:
You have 4 Serial ATA headers (Connectors) on the motherboard.
Your SATA harddrive should be plugged into the SATA1 header.

You can choose any open available SATA header, to plug your SATA DVD burner drive into.
BIOS will see it once you turn the computer on.

3) If you somehow have been using an IDE {PATA} harddrive, and have it connected to your IDE connector on the motherboard, you SHOULD not use a DVD drive on that flat IDE ribbon cable, also.

BIOS has to find which device has the Operating System on it, (Windows), and then hand the computer over to the Operating System.

To state again, BIOS will look at both devices connected to that flat ribbon cable. The Harddrive, and the DVD drive.
It will then determine that the Harddrive, is the device that has Windows on it, not the DVD drive.

This slows the computer down, and could result in a blue screen.

If you have an IDE harddrive plugged into the motherboard, it would be best to use a SATA DVD drive.

1) An IDE cable should be plugged in with the Number 1 socket hole in the IDE cable's connector, going on the Number 1 pin on the harddrive.

Number 1 pin on an IDE optical drive, or harddrive, is next to the 4-pin power connection.

Two rows of pins.

Next over are the Jumper pins in the Jumper Block.

Finally, next to the Jumper Block is the 4-pin power connection.


To make sure the IDE flat ribbon cable, is inserted into the harddrive in the correct position, a Locating Lug is usually on the IDE flat ribbon cable's connector.

A small rectangle, or two bumps side by side, on the top edge of the connector.

This Locating Lug lines up with a cutout, in the circuit board of the harddrive.
A Locating Notch.

Sometimes there isn't a Locating Lug.
In this case look at the side edge of the IDE cable for the faint Red stripe.
This red stripe is on the same side as Number 1 pin.

So when you go to plug the IDE cable in, make sure the Red stripe is facing the 4-pin power connection.

Goes for an optical drive (CD/DVD drive), or a Harddrive.



(On the motherboard there are usually two IDE headers. {Connectors}

One for the Primary IDE device, a Harddrive, and one for the Secondary IDE device.
Usually an optical drive.

Next to the Primary IDE connector on the motherboard may be PRI, or Pri, or Primary, or IDE 1.
{ In TINY letter/numbers }

Next to the Secondary IDE connector on the motherboard, may be SEC, or Sec, or Secondary, or IDE 2.

Sometimes only the Secondary connector is marked. This tells you the other connector is the Primary connector.

Number 1 pin is towards the marking. Primary, or Secondary.
The Red stripe goes towards the marking on the motherboard )

Also;
There are two rows of pins on the back of the Harddrive for the IDE cable.
With a cursory glance it may look as though there are two rows of 20 pins.
There is not.

One pin has been removed. One row only has 19 pins.
Generally, but NOT always, the matching socket hole in the IDE cable's connector, is blocked off with a plug.

An IDE cable only uses 39 socket holes even if there are 40 shown.

Also; NOT a good idea to put a Harddrive, and an Optical Drive, on the same IDE cable.

BIOS looks to see which drive has the Master Boot Record.
Windows master boot record.
This is on the Harddrive.

BIOS will look at both, the Harddrive, and the Optical Drive.
This slows the computer down, for one.
For two, BIOS may not find which drive has the master boot record, with both drives on the same IDE flat ribbon cable.

Harddrive goes to the Primary IDE cable.
Optical drive/s go to the Secondary IDE cable.



2) As for the power cable it is a 4-pin standard Peripheral power cable.
Often misnomered as a 'Molex' cable.

[Molex was the model name given by the first company to produce this connector.
It stuck.
Kind of like referring to an open-end wrench as a Crescent wrench ]

It is also a STANDARD 4-pin Peripheral power cable, because there two 4-pin Peripheral power cables.

Test all leads that attach to your hard drive including electrical extensions,IDE,SATA and

the leads from your motherboard to your hard drive make sure they have a secure connection and are not faulty or just replace them there probably old and faulty

How do you connect two hard drives to a computer?


1. For SATA, you just need a second SATA cable to plug it in and a power cable from the power supply.
2. For IDE, you will need a second IDE cable to plug the second hard drive, AND you will have to set both hard drives jumpers either to cable select or one Master and the other one Slave, based on which one you have the operating system.

I would like an internal view of eMachine T4150 to be sure everything is connected correctly


I could not find an internal photo with everything connected but I could find a picture of the motherboard but it was very small. Just make sure your graphics card is inserted fully into AGP slot, processor is clipped down, memory is clipped down, and your hard drives are on one IDE ribbon cable and your rom drives are on the secondary IDE channel. (jumpers are correctly set to Master/Slave). Then make sure the CMOS jumper is set correctly and check the button cell battery for the CMOS clock. That's it

Are you trying to find out for your power supply cables or your data/motherboard cables? There are a lot of different kinds of connectors, so make sure you have the right one plugged in the right way. Here are pictures of both:
Your computer may use both the older and newer style plugs and cables.

IF YOU HAVE THIS KIND OF CONNECTOR(OLDER) FOR YOUR HARD DRIVE, IT IS IMPORTANT TO REMEMBER THAT THE HARD DRIVE SHOULD BE PLUGGED IN TO YOUR PRIMARY IDE(PATA) PLUG ON THE MOTHERBOARD (IT WILL BE BLUE, RED OR A COLOR DIFFERENT FROM THE OTHERS). ALSO, SOMETIMES THEY HAVE A NOTCH, SO MAKE SURE THEY ARE IN THE RIGHT DIRECTION. THE PATA (IDE)HARD DRIVE CONNECTOR IS THE GREEN ONE. HARD DRIVES AND DISK DRIVES ARE 40 PIN AND FLOPPY DRIVES ARE 34 PIN(THE BLACK ONE).

Hard drive recognized as slave drive


You probably need the change the jumper on the hard drive itself. The jumper looks like a thin little cap that covers a set of pins on the back of the hard drive. You should see it next to when you power supply connects and most drives will usually have a diagram on how to change the jumper from a slave to a master.
