I have the same problem like yours right now. The on-board circuit of my Seagate Barracuda burned and I'm planning to buy new Seagate Barracuda with the same specifications, same model.. I will try to disassemble the circuit of the new one and connect it to the old hard drive to take a chance if it will work and retrieve my files. If it doesnt work, at least I try and I still have a new hard dist to store my new files.. If you want to do the same, you must be careful in handling the circuit board. It is very sensitive and can be damaged with just touching the components.. I recommend you to discharge static electricity of your hands by touching anything that is made of steel.. The steel will discharge static electricity, but still, to make sure you wont damage the circuit, just touch the circuit board on its sides.. Never touch any components, it will damage your circuit board.

Yes, it can be used that way. Do you already have an operating system installed on your first drive?

Disk can be formatted after installing operating system on the first disk or prior to installation if you intend to install the operating system on this disk.

Barracuda hard disk 80gb

the first boot sector of the hard drive is corrupt so fdisk wont work
please use software to repair the boot sectors zero and 63.
usually the softwares are superfdisk which is free on net.

also if you fail use seagate disk manager bootable version. it will be very quick and handy in long term too to format seagate hard drives
