Depends on your router and your cable company.

Generally, all defaults work. I have Comcast and use a Netgear router. My router is set to automatically obtain an IP, DNS servers and uses the default MAC address.

If you have more info, I'd be happy to help.

You can log into your router's page ie.. 192.168.1.1 or reasonable factsimile. under connection type remove PPPOE (usually for DSL) and select DNS (Dynamic Name Sever) then accept defaults and enter any other info it might demand. log out after the router confirms that the setting has changed. Now try to make a new connection to your cable's server. Good Luck.

Where is the wireless switch on the dell vostro 200

Unlike notebook computers, most desktops don't come with wireless networking built in. I can't find any mention on Dell's site that the Vostro 200 has wireless capability, so this computer doesn't have a wireless switch. To use your desktop computer on a wireless network, you'll need to install a wireless adapter. USB adapters are very easy to use since you just have to plug them in. They're not expensive and you can easily find them at retail stores and online.

Is there a way to hook into my dsl internet to get wifi

Does your DSL not have a wireless router? If not, you can certainly get one for cheap...walmart has Belkin/Netgear/ASUS wireless routers for about $40...the instructions are pretty straight-forward. It's a cheap and easy. let me know if you need assistance.

I have a used compacq 530 but do not know what is missing because i cannot get it to hook up to the internet

Possibly if you gave more information .....does it have a network card installed, is the network card "enabled" in the hardware settings, does the network card have correct drivers ? ( no yellow question mark beside it ) Do you have an internet provider and account ? Is your internet high speed or dialup, if it is dialup, do you have a modem installed - with correct drivers ? Is it working - do a modem query to see if it responds ?
If using a network card and cable or DSL internet, is the cable connected from the PC to the cable or dsl modem ? Is the cable or dsl modem plugged in and the power and wan light on ? With the little bit of information you have given, it is not really possible to give an exact answer to what the problem is.

Wireless connection set up

Are you trying to hook up the laptop wirelessly to the pc? because then the pc would need to have a wireless card as well....sounds like I need more info, but if you are trying to do what I think you are, you should just get a wireless router instead, hook the pc tower directly to it via ethernet cable, and then setup the laptop to connect to the router. The router would hook to your dsl or cable router....what service do you have?

Hi,

A couple of questions pls:
  1. how are you connected, DSL or dial-up?
  2. if it is DSL, wireless, cable, two-wire/telephone?
  3. what is the brand of your modem?
  4. do you use a router?
  5. what is your machine, a laptop or desktop?
  6. what is your operating system?
  7. who installed the system?
  8. who is your ISP and what is your subscription/package (speed of connection)?
  9. have you tried calling your ISP?
Hope you post back additional information.

Good luck and kind regards. Thank you for using FixYa.

Can't hook up my router. i hook up the router but cant remember how to set it up to pick up the ip address' I have a Blitzz netwave base g4 wireless router. how do i connect to the internet?

open your internet explorer and type in 192.168.1.254
it should ask you for your password
the settings are in there.
set it up according to which internet service you have be it dsl cable etc.
there should be some instructions in that page when you get to the setup page.

We recently got high speed internet from Qwest. It will not work. It keeps saying that the can't "ping" it. All light are green; power DSL, and the Ethernet. The internet is not. I have...

The DSL router/modem will receive an address from your ISP (Qwest) and will assign an address to the connected PC.

There should be a cable that goes from your DSL modem to your PC. It'll either be a USB cable (flat rectangular plug on the PC end), or a RJ45 (looks like a wider telephone plug).

If there is neither connection between the DSL modem and your PC, then the PC can't "talk" to the DSL modem, so it's not getting an address from the DSL modem.

I have a DI-624 router that worked fine while I was hooked to cable internet. It delivered wireless to my laptop. Now I have DSL and the router still wrked for the computer and telephone but not wireless....

Reset the router back to factory by using the small pinhole reset switch on the back. After that, you should just be able to plug and play.
