Question about Acer AL1715 (Black, Silver) 17" LCD Monitor
It sounds more video card/driver/settings related.
Try setting the resolution to 1024x768 intially. It may help to find the optimal resolution settings for that monitor. Max resolution on it seems to be 1280 x 1024 / 75.0 Hz.
Still seeing double? Try updating your video card drivers.
Still? Try installing the LCD driver. While I've never had to do this, it may be an issue with this model. For XP, select your model here: http://www.acerpanam.com/synapse/forms/acerdrivers.cfm
