Question about Whirlpool Heating & Cooling

Open Question

Our whirlpool water heater is not heating. My husband replaced the thermocoupler and it still doesn't work. We have had it for 8-9 months. Whirlpool is sending a new gas valve. We are reading that this will continue to happen even with the new parts. Is there a universal gas valve that we could replace it with that will work or should we consider just purchasing a different hot water heater? The model number is BFG1F4034T3NOV.

They make a adapter you can buy at lowes to switch the thread pattern for thermocouples. If you can't find it post me back and I will try to find another location you can get it at.

SOURCE: Rusty water -

With the right tools and elbow grease its not that big of a deal.

Most folks try tackling it with chanel locks and a pair of pliers. without the right tools, it can be a challenge.

You may have an hours work, and less than 30 bucks in the job.

A new heater will run you 350 bucks easy.

Scottsz is correct, but they will ship you the entire housing and a converter (still free of charge) and they no longer charge shipping and handling if it is still in warranty.

It will be on the equipment id tag on the front of the unit. Normally it is above and to the right of the pilot light access but sometimes some turkey will slap it anywhere on the tank.

WHY WON'T HOT WATER TANK IGNITER WON'T SPARK

In a typical gas hot water heater, the igniter glows to heat a thermocouple which opens the gas valve. There is no "spark" involved. Depending upon how faint the glow is, the thermocouple may not be heating sufficiently and may have to be replaced.

Whirlpool gas water heater pilot light will not relight

Are you holding the pilot button in long enough. Sometimes it takes a long time for the thermocouple to open. Or you need a new thermocouple, there cheap and easy to replace.

My whirlpool 50 gal natural gas water heater wont stay lit?

Are you sure the pilot is heating up the thermocouple? Make sure the flame is close enough to the thermocouple. Also make sure the thermocouple is seated properly in control valve. Try unscrewing and resetting it back into place.

I can not light the pilot on my reliance sta-kleen 502 (30 gallon) waterheater. please help

Reliance is Rheem
Replace thermocouple is best start point.
Example Whirlpool manual shows general replacement steps on page 22:
Buy thermocouple at hardware or home center. measure length before going to store.
http://waterheatertimer.org/pdf/Whirlpool-6510397.pdf

Utube videos show how to replace thermocouple

Many things can affect pilot:
Low gas pressure, Water or air or debris in the gas control valve, High-heat event causing ECO to trip requiring new gas control valve, burner and tubes needing clean-out, FV sensor tripped, loose or bad thermocouple.
Manual above shows general steps for doing some of these things, but service technician is probably best choice if thermocouple does not fix problem.

Gas water heaters require periodic maintenance.
If repairs cost more than $330, then buy new gas water heater and install yourself.
Use the old one for a solar collector.

Pilot lite wont stay on water heater    is 10 month old  whirlpool

If it is only 10 months old it should have electroin ignition. If not, it sounds like the thermocoupler is bad. Contact Whirlpool for warranty. Hope this helps

Whirlpool water heater pilot light does not stay lite

I have a Lowe's Whirlpool water heater. I've experienced the same problems as I've seen described here. My pilot light started going out several times a day. It was not such a big deal, the tank is well insulated so the water would stay warm - I'd just re-light the pilot before going to bed and before going to work. That worked well for about three days, but the problem got progressively worse until it just would not light at all. I replaced the thermocouple with a Honeywell universal thermocouple that I got at Home Depot - that did not solve the problem. I'm very handy, so I decided instead of going through warranty service and having to wait three or four days for replacement parts, I'd buy a new gas valve at Lowes and try that. It cost $54.00 and it worked. By the way, I put the original thermocouple back in and the pilot light stays lit - it was definitely the gas valve and not the thermocouple in my case. It was a real pain to do since I had to drain the tank, but it only took about three hours total. From what I've read, these things last anywhere between six months and two years. That's ridiculous, but at least I have hot water now. If you are reading this because you are considering purchasing a Lowes hot water heater, DON'T!!! I started my search for a replacement gas valve at Home Depot, but they don't stock them. Lowes had 8 on the shelf. That tells you something right there - the water heaters Home Depot stocks don't need to have the gas valves replaced before the tank wears out - there's no demand for the valves so Home Depot doesn't stock them. Lowes probably sells 8 of them a week - all the boxes were shiny and new, not dirty and dusty like some items get when they sit around in home improvement stores.
